The box-office hit that was born in a gym

Laura Antonelli didn't seek fame at the Cinecittà casting calls. Before becoming the face of European eroticism, she worked as a physical education teacher at a high school in Rome. Her move into film was a commercial accident that ended up defining the look of 1970s Italian cinema.

In 1973, the film Malizia grossed six billion lire at the time. That story of a maid who upends the hierarchy of a Sicilian family made her the best-paid actress in the country. It was the start of a national obsession.

But she never felt comfortable with the label of object of desire. Antonelli preferred the quiet of technical film sets to the parties of Roman high society. Her gaze always held a icy distance that the smartest directors knew how to use for roles with greater dramatic depth.

Luchino Visconti was the first to see that behind that look there was a true actress. In 1976, he cast her in the lead role of L'innocente and turned her into a tortured aristocrat. It was her breakthrough, far from the racy B-movie comedies.

The Body as a Political Prison

For eight years she had a volcanic relationship with Jean-Paul Belmondo. They traveled between Paris and Rome while the French press tried to make sense of a romance full of escapes and reunions. These were the golden years of a woman who seemed to have complete control over her public image.

In 1981, she worked with Ettore Scola on Passione d'amore. She played a sick, physically worn-out woman, deliberately breaking away from her own beauty. Antonelli desperately wanted the industry to stop looking at her waist and start looking at her talent.

But the film industry doesn't forgive the passage of time.

The 1980s brought mediocre projects and a sense of professional exhaustion. She tried to recapture the glow of her early days with less ambitious productions, but audiences were already looking for new faces on Berlusconi's private television. So she retreated to her villa in Cerveteri, waiting for a script that never arrived.

The Fall in the Rome Courts

On the night of April 27, 1991, police entered her home and found 36 grams of cocaine. She was arrested immediately. A court sentenced her to house arrest for drug trafficking in a case that lasted ten years, until she was acquitted on the grounds that she was considered a mere user.

That scandal destroyed her mental health and her fortune.

In 1991, in an attempt to revive her career, she shot Malizia 2000. The production was a logistical and personal disaster: the producers forced her to undergo cosmetic treatments that caused a severe allergic reaction. Her face was disfigured, and she sued those responsible for the film in a lawsuit that dragged on until 2006.

The gamble paid off in the courtroom but failed in her personal life.

In 2003, the Italian justice system awarded her compensation of 108,000 euros after acknowledging the psychological damage caused by the slowness of the legal proceedings. By then, Antonelli was living in seclusion in a small apartment in Ladispoli, finding comfort only in the Catholic faith and parish radio broadcasts.

She died of a heart attack on June 22, 2015. Her housekeeper found her on the floor of her kitchen at eight in the morning. She was living on a pension of 510 euros a month and had explicitly requested that there be no public tributes and that no photos of her old age be published. The bank account of the woman who once saved the Italian box office barely had enough to cover the cost of her funeral.
