Serena Grandi was not a method actress when Tinto Brass invited her to a hotel in Rome to offer her the role of a lifetime. The director was looking for a physicality reminiscent of the postwar screen sirens, and she fit the mold. That Bolognese beauty with impossible curves became the object of fantasies across half of Europe after the release of Miranda in 1985.
And Italian cinema had found its new obsession.
But her career was not limited to silk sheets and cardboard sets of erotic cinema. She worked with directors such as Dino Risi on Teresa and Sergio Corbucci on Rimini Rimini. Those were the 1980s, and Grandi was earning millions of lire while critics looked at her with a contempt she elegantly ignored.
The industry doesn't forgive the passage of time on the bodies it once adored. So the 1990s were a murky period in which roles began to dry up and public interest shifted toward younger faces. She persevered in minor productions (many of them straight-to-home-video) without losing the femme fatale aura the industry had imposed on her.
In 2003, Serena Grandi's life took a turn that had nothing to do with movie scripts. She was arrested on suspicion of possessing and trafficking narcotics in an operation that filled the Italian tabloid covers. That episode pushed her out of the spotlight for a long period of time.
Justice was slow, but it came.
After years of litigation, it was proven that her involvement was nonexistent, and she was acquitted of all charges. But the damage was already done in an industry that tends to be merciless with legal scandals. During that time she turned to writing and small television appearances to keep a financial situation that was beginning to suffer afloat, due to the lack of steady film shoots.
Her cinematic redemption came through Paolo Sorrentino in 2013. The director cast her as Lorena, a faded former television star, in La Grande Bellezza. It was a brief role (almost an extended cameo), but loaded with brutal symbolism about the decadence of Italian society and the fading of physical beauty.
That film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2014.
That moment reminded the public who Serena Grandi was beyond the calendars of the 1980s. But she did not try to recover her lost stardom at all costs. She took part in reality TV shows such as Grande Fratello VIP in 2017 to clear her debts and maintain her presence in Italian popular culture.
In 2021 she returned to art-house cinema with a role in Lei mi parla ancora under the direction of Pupi Avati. In this film she played Clementina in a story about love and memory that is a world away from the explosiveness of her early career. The production had an estimated budget of 3 million euros and was distributed mainly through digital platforms due to theater restrictions at the time.
Grandi published her memoir, Serena a tutti i costi, in 2021 to settle scores with her past. The book details her relationship with power and the price she paid for being Italy's most desired body. She currently lives in the Rimini area, where she manages her personal affairs far from the major studios of Cinecittà.
