Sabrina Ferilli was turned down by the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. The examiners saw nothing special in that girl from Fiano Romano who wanted to conquer the world. But she decided the academy would not dictate her future.
During the 1980s, she racked up tiny roles in films that nobody remembers today. She worked a lot and earned little. Italian cinema of the era was fiercely competitive, and stereotypes weighed heavily.
In 1994 Paolo Virzì handed her the script for La bella vita, and everything fell into place. She won the Nastro d'Argento for Best Actress. That performance as a worker in crisis proved that Ferilli was much more than a pretty face.
That award was her first victory against the system.
Her popularity exploded massively at the end of the decade. In 1999, she starred in the series Commesse, and the ratings were astronomical. Television won her the affection of the general public, but film remained her battleground.
The year 2000 marked a point of no return in her public image. She agreed to pose for the calendar of Max magazine, and it sold more than a million copies at newsstands. No other Italian actress has managed to repeat a similar figure in physical sales.
In 2001 AS Roma won the league title, and she kept her promise. She posed in a bikini in front of hundreds of thousands of people at the Circus Maximus. That gesture turned her into a kind of popular goddess for the Roman people.
The media noise never managed to dull her instinct.
But that sex symbol label began to suffocate her. So she sought refuge in projects that demanded less skin and more substance. She worked with directors such as the Taviani brothers on Tu ridi and with Antonello Grimaldi.
Paolo Sorrentino cast 2013 her as Ramona in La grande bellezza. Her character was a tired, sick stripper who brought the only real note of humanity to a film full of excess. International critics were won over by her restraint on screen.
It was a triumphant return to the front line of European cinema.
From then on, she chose her projects with almost surgical precision. In 2015 she shot Io e lei alongside Margherita Buy. They played a female couple in a story that avoided worn-out melodrama to focus on everyday life.
Her relationship with politics has always been public and unfiltered. She openly identifies as left-wing and has never hidden her opinions about how her country is run. That honesty has brought her fierce criticism, but it has also given her a credibility that other actresses lack.
In 2021, she starred in the miniseries Svegliati amore mio, about industrial pollution in Italy. The production had such a strong social impact that the government had to explain the situation at the steel plants.
In 2024 she worked again with Paolo Virzì on Un altro ferragosto. The film was shot on the island of Ventotene with a standard production budget for the Italian market.
The film grossed 1.7 million euros in its first weeks in theaters.
