Lee Min-ki arrived in Seoul in 2003 intending to walk a runway, not to memorize scripts. He had the right look, but he lacked the ambition of a method actor. Everything about him seemed accidental until television forced him to take it seriously.
His debut in 2005 with Be Strong, Geum-soon! was just a way to pay the bills. Nobody expected that boy with the distracted gaze and sharp cheekbones to keep up with the pace of the Korean industry. But audiences connected with his lack of artifice.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2009, he starred in Haeundae, and the disaster genre gave him the visibility that romantic drama had denied him. He played a lifeguard in a production that sold more than 11 million tickets in South Korea. He wasn't the lead, but his on-screen death became the most talked-about moment of the year.
That success allowed him to choose riskier, less conventional projects. In 2011, he starred in Quick and Spellbound, two films that unapologetically blended real action with dark comedy. His acting style moved away from the usual histrionics in favor of something drier and more restrained.
Lee Min-ki's career came to an abrupt halt in 2014 when he served his mandatory military service. It was a long break that coincided with unnecessary media noise away from the sets. That could have ended any career in a market as conservative as Seoul's.
He came back quietly.
In 2017, he accepted the role of Nam Se-hee in the series Because This Is My First Life. It was a smart decision. He played a man obsessed with his mortgage and his cat's well-being, a character who barely showed emotion. Audiences discovered that Lee Min-ki could carry an entire series with nothing but the movement of his eyes.
That role redefined his position in the cable television industry. He was no longer the young leading man of the 2000s but an actor capable of portraying the apathy of a generation suffocated by money. The series drew extremely high ratings for a premium cable channel at the time.
But the actor didn't get stuck in domestic drama. In 2018, he shot The Beauty Inside and proved he could handle high-intensity romance without losing the emotional distance that defines him.
His real maturity arrived in 2022 with My Liberation Notes. In this production, he traded expensive suits for a frustrated man in a stifling rural setting. It was his most physically demanding and exhausting work to date, because it required a vulnerability he had never shown before.
Many critics pointed out that his performance as Yeom Chang-hee was the heart of the story. The script required him to talk a lot and very fast, breaking away from his usual image as a quiet man.
In 2024, he switched gears to star in Crash, a series centered on traffic crimes. He played Cha Yeon-ho, an investigator with a brilliant mind but no social skills. The premiere drew a 6% audience share on its original network, a very solid figure for a technical procedural.
That same year, he joined the shoot of Face Me to play a cold, calculating plastic surgeon. It is a role that explores facial reconstruction after violent crimes and requires absolute technical precision in hand movements.
Lee Min-ki prefers to live on the fringes of fame and avoids social media whenever possible. He still keeps his residence in Seoul and rarely gives interviews unless they are strictly tied to his promotional contracts. In 2025, he plans to begin production on a new suspense feature under an independent label.
The production company confirmed that the project's budget does not exceed three million dollars.
