Leon Robinson never needed a last name for Hollywood to know who he was. In 1991, he worked under Robert Townsend in The Five Heartbeats, and audiences sensed that this guy had something different. His presence filled the frame effortlessly through a mix of arrogance and vulnerability that fit perfectly on screen.

Before arriving in Los Angeles, he played college basketball. That athletic background was key when, in 1994, he shot Above the Rim. He shared the screen with Tupac Shakur, and the chemistry between them shaped much of the film's tone. But before that came his massive success.

In 1993, he was part of the cast of Cool Runnings. The story of the Jamaican bobsledders grossed more than 150 million dollars worldwide. He played Derice Bannock with a restraint that balanced out the comedy of his castmates.

The actor who chased the myths

His career took off when he began playing music legends. In 1998, he starred in the miniseries The Temptations, playing David Ruffin. That performance earned him critical respect for his ability to capture the singer's self-destruction without slipping into excess.

And the gamble paid off.

Two years later, in 2000, he transformed into Little Richard for an NBC production. He spent months studying the artist's gestures and voice to avoid parody. Filming was mainly done on location in Australia to cut costs for a production that recreated several decades of American history.

The movie performed well in the audience ratings of the time. It also helped the actor set a standard in the biographical TV genre that few have matched since.

TV's safe haven and its own pace

Starting in 2019, he joined the cast of City on a Hill. He played Jackie Rohr for several seasons and brought back that tough New York edge that has always worked so well in crime dramas. But Leon never let his other passion slip away from the set.

He has been leading the band Leon and the Peoples for decades.

In 2022, he took part in the action thriller A Day to Die alongside Bruce Willis. Filming took place in Jackson, Mississippi, under the direction of Wes Miller. The movie had an estimated budget of $5 million and was distributed directly through digital platforms and international markets.
