Lewis Hamilton

Tom Cruise personally offered him a fighter pilot role in Top Gun: Maverick. Hamilton already had seven Formula 1 World Championship titles under his belt and an absolute obsession with movies, but his racing schedule kept him from spending months on a set. He had to turn the offer down.

It broke his heart.

That accidental slam of the door shaped his next steps away from the racetrack. Since his work on the circuits didn't allow him to commit to the long days of a film shoot as an actor, the only route into the major studios was to get things moving from behind the desk.

The Fighter Jet That Never Took Off

His first forays onto the big screen had been mere pastimes. In 2011 he lent his voice to a race car in Cars 2 and repeated the experience in Cars 3 in 2017. In 2016 he accepted a minor cameo in the comedy Zoolander 2.

But Hamilton didn't want to settle for fun cameos. In private meetings in Los Angeles, he kept saying that most racing movies looked like cartoons full of ridiculous mistakes. He wanted to change things from the inside.

In 2022 he founded his own production company, Dawn Apollo Films, partnering with talent manager Penni Thow. His first big move was signing a first-look deal with Apple TV+ to develop scripted and documentary sports projects.

And the industry took him seriously.

The Three-Hundred-Million-Dollar Budget

The real test came when Apple financed the blockbuster F1, directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt. Hamilton took on the role of executive producer and demanded veto power over the script to correct any implausible plot twists.

For months, he reviewed the drafts line by line. He crossed out entire lines of dialogue whenever mechanical terms were used incorrectly, and he scrapped overtaking sequences that defied the laws of grip on the track.

Filming began in 2023 using Formula 2 cars modified by Mercedes to look like real race cars. They fitted miniaturized IMAX cameras inside the cockpits and filmed during real race weekends in front of tens of thousands of fans at circuits such as Silverstone and Monza.

The Hollywood writers' and actors' strikes in 2023 halted filming for months. The forced stoppage pushed production costs above 300 million dollars, forcing the studio to rethink the numbers to avoid box office losses.

Nobody makes fiction at three hundred miles per hour without paying the bills.

During the final edit in 2025, the team discarded dozens of hours of 6K footage because chassis vibrations had shattered three lenses designed specifically for the car's nose.
