Lily Allen sat down with the producers of 2:22 A Ghost Story in 2021 with a clear intention. She knew audiences expected to see the pop star who dominated the charts in 2006. But she was looking for the quiet of stage acting in London's West End and a careful distance from her own public image.
She was born into an environment where film and television were part of everyday life. Her father (Keith Allen) and her mother (Alison Owen) gave her a surname with real weight in the British industry of the 1990s. But she preferred to blow it all up through music before looking for a real place in front of the camera.
In 2019, she accepted a supporting role in the film How to Build a Girl. It was a brief appearance under the direction of Coky Giedroyc, where she played Elizabeth Taylor. That experience sparked an interest that the recording studio could no longer satisfy.
Music was only the prologue.
During her stage debut in 2021, British critics kept their claws out until the first intermission. Allen played Jenny in a supernatural suspense story that demanded an emotional restraint few gave her credit for. And the gamble paid off.
She earned a nomination for the Olivier Award for Best Actress that same year. It wasn't recognition for her previous career but for her ability to hold the tension on stage alongside long-established actors. Because Allen grasps the rhythm of a scene almost instinctively.
Before stepping onto the West End stage, she worked on her craft privately to move away from the habits of world tours. In 2023, she returned to theater in The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh. In this play, she took on the role of Katurian (a part originally written for a man) and explored police brutality and childhood trauma in a production at the Duke of York's Theatre.
Acting gave her back control over her personal narrative.
In 2023, she starred in Dreamland for the channel Sky Atlantic. Set on the coast of Margate, this series let her explore the dynamics of a dysfunctional family through the character of Mel. The production used a dark comedy tone to address themes such as unwanted pregnancy and middle-class secrets.
Allen shot this drama during the summer of 2022, aiming for a naturalness reminiscent of the gritty realism of British cinema in the 1960s. But her approach was much drier and more direct. She avoided acting embellishments to focus on the chemistry with Freema Agyeman.
In 2025, she joined the cast of the series Prime Target for Apple TV+, executive produced by Ridley Scott. In this conspiracy thriller, she plays a journalist investigating a mathematical plot that could threaten global security. Filming took place mainly in London and Cambridge.
The series has 8 episodes of one hour each and a budget of more than €40 million.
