Liu Yifei entered the Beijing Film Academy at just 15 years old. She was the youngest student in her class, and that fact set the pace for a career that never slowed down for lack of ambition. In 2002, she returned from New York to reconnect with her roots, and Chinese audiences were captivated by a presence that seemed to come from another era.
Her debut in The Story of a Noble Family in 2003 put her on the radar of the major television networks. But it was not until her role in period dramas such as Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils that her image became fixed in the public imagination. Her success was so sudden that the national press had to coin new terms to describe her magnetism.
And she earned it the hard way.
In 2008, she made the leap to international martial arts cinema with The Forbidden Kingdom. Sharing the bill with Jackie Chan and Jet Li demanded a level of physical fitness that Liu Yifei accepted without hesitation. She learned to handle a sword and to shoot action scenes without stunt doubles whenever her contract allowed it. Signing with the William Morris Agency at that time was the first real step in her expansion beyond Asian borders.
Disney spent a full year searching for its lead for the live-action Mulan. In 2017, the studio announced that Liu Yifei had been chosen after a casting process that considered a thousand candidates across five continents. The project carried the weight of a global brand and a budget that exceeded 200 million dollars.
The film was released in 2020 under nearly impossible circumstances.
International critics were divided, and box office takings suffered from theater closures across much of the world. But she carried the big-budget production on her shoulders. She performed 90 percent of her own stunts, including horseback riding and hand-to-hand combat. For Liu Yifei, physical training is a non-negotiable part of building the character.
By 2006, she had already tried her luck in music with an album recorded in Japanese under Sony Music. That phase taught her that her place was in front of the camera, not on a commercial pop stage. So she decided to focus her efforts on productions that demanded deeper dramatic maturity.
After the noise of Hollywood, the actress chose to return to her roots in Chinese television, with projects of greater narrative depth. In 2022, she starred in A Dream of Splendor and broke audience records on digital platforms. The series restored the prestige of historical drama with a production that avoided the excessive digital effects of the past.
In 2024, she premiered The Tale of Rose, playing a woman over twenty years of her life.
This project marked a change of pace, far from the swordplay. Filming took place on real locations in Beijing and Shanghai over several months in 2023. The international distribution deal for this series was closed for a record sum before the first episode aired. Filming of her next project for 2025 has a fixed budget of 45 million yuan per episode.
