Lokesh Kanagaraj worked at a bank before cinema consumed him. He didn't come from a family of artists or have contacts in the Chennai film industry. He spent his mornings buried in loan paperwork and his nights shooting short films with a group of friends.
One day he decided a steady paycheck wasn't worth it.
In 2017, he premiered Maanagaram. It was a lean, violent debut that worked because its interwoven narrative was very well built. He didn't need big stars for critics to notice his way of filming the night and urban tension.
In 2019, Kaithi hit theaters. It's a pure action film that skips the songs and the obligatory romance typical of Indian cinema. In the Tamil Nadu industry, this was almost a commercial suicide. But the story of an ex-convict who must save a group of police officers in a single night raked in millions of rupees.
Lokesh Kanagaraj understands pacing better than many veteran directors.
With Vikram in 2022, he connected characters from his earlier films. He created what fans call the LCU, or Lokesh Cinematic Universe. He brought the legend Kamal Haasan into a plot about special agents and drug cartels that broke the global box office.
His shoots usually last less than one hundred days. He's a director who prefers natural light and real locations over overused green screens. In 2021, he directed Master and handled the ego of a superstar like Vijay without losing his dark visual style.
And he pulled it off without the usual dance sequences every twenty minutes.
In 2023, he reunited with Vijay on Leo. The film was loosely inspired by the graphic novel that gave rise to A History of Violence. The movie grossed more than 600 million rupees in its first weeks in theaters.
His films shy away from flawless heroes. Kanagaraj's leads are usually weary men with traumatic pasts and a complicated relationship with the law. Yet they always keep a code of honor that resonates with young audiences across India.
In 2025, he signed on to direct Rajinikanth in Coolie. The budget for this production surpassed all his previous figures in logistics and post-production. The script was written under a strict nondisclosure agreement to prevent leaks on social media.
Filming the action sequences of this movie required Phantom cameras to capture details at 1000 frames per second.
