Lou Llobell was born in Zimbabwe in 1995. Her father is Spanish and her mother is Zimbabwean, a blend of cultures that shaped her childhood in South Africa before she made the final move to Europe. In 2013, she settled in the United Kingdom to study acting at the University of Birmingham, though her most demanding technical training came later at the Drama Centre London.
This school is known for its almost military discipline and for training actors who aren't afraid of physical effort. Llobell used those years to refine a restrained acting style, where a look often says more than dialogue. In 2019, she finished her studies and began looking for her first foothold in an industry that didn't yet know where to place her.
And then the definitive call came.
Her entry into the professional circuit was neither gradual nor quiet. After graduating, she landed a supporting role in the film Voyagers, released in 2021, where she shared the set with Colin Farrell and Tye Sheridan. But the project that truly put her name on the desks of the major studios was the television adaptation of Isaac Asimov's work.
In 2019, Apple TV+ signed her to play Gaal Dornick in the series Foundation. The studio's decision stirred up buzz on specialist forums because the character in the original novels was a man. Llobell ignored the outside criticism and focused on building a version of the character that brought a human sensitivity to a plot loaded with mathematical concepts and galactic politics.
Production on the first season was a massive logistical challenge, with shoots on locations in Iceland, Malta and the Canary Islands. Llobell had to film physically demanding scenes in water tanks and extreme weather conditions. The result was a performance that gave viewers an emotional anchor amid a dazzling display of visual effects.
The studio's bet was all in.
In 2021, the series became one of the pillars of the streaming platform. Llobell went from being an unknown to leading one of the most expensive fictions in television history. Her on-screen chemistry with Jared Harris (who plays Hari Seldon) was key to making the storyline work, building a mentor-and-protégé relationship that evolved into something far more complex and dark.
During the filming of the second season in 2023, the actress delved into the physical evolution of Gaal. The script required the character to spend decades in cryogenic sleep and face total isolation. Llobell worked closely with the costume and makeup departments to reflect the passage of time and the psychological toll on a woman who carries the fate of humanity.
But her career isn't limited to big-budget science fiction. In several interviews, Llobell has expressed her interest in European auteur cinema and in projects that explore her African and Spanish roots. She speaks several languages and maintains a strong connection to Spain, a country she visits often and where she looks for opportunities to shoot in her father's language.
And the result was solid.
In 2024, production began on the third installment of Foundation, with a shooting plan centered on studios in Prague and various locations in Poland. The budget for this new stage is estimated to exceed $45 million in direct shooting costs alone. The actress remains under an exclusive contract with this project while she considers scripts for independent feature films in the United Kingdom.
Filming of the new episodes wrapped its main phase in May 2024, under the direction of David S. Goyer. Post-production on these chapters requires a digital rendering process that often takes more than ten months due to the complexity of the computer-generated environments.
