Louisa Jacobson completed her training at the Yale School of Drama in 2017. Before that, she studied psychology at Vassar. She did not take the easy route or the red carpets through inheritance. She chose to use her middle name as her stage surname to create a necessary distance from the Gummer family and the weight of her mother's influence in the industry.
Her academic training was her shield.
Her career in professional theater began to take shape in 2018 with the play Member of the Wedding at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. There, she shared the stage with Tavi Gevinson. Jacobson is not an actress of pure instinct but of method and textual analysis. She likes to break down every line before proposing an intention in rehearsals.
In 2019, she played Juliet at the Old Globe in San Diego. It was a production that stripped away any trace of cheap naivety from the character. Local critics praised her ability to carry Shakespeare's verse without it sounding forced. But the jump to television requires a different kind of physical and mental stamina.
Casting for The Gilded Age began in early 2019. HBO was looking for a lead who could embody the transition between old New York and industrial modernity. Jacobson landed the role of Marian Brook after several screen tests in which she showed that period costumes didn't overshadow her expressiveness.
And the plan worked out.
Filming of the first season was seriously delayed by the global health crisis of 2020. Jacobson used that downtime to study the social history of the late 19th century. Because in Julian Fellowes, protocol is just as important as dialogue. Working alongside Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon forced her to adjust her acting rhythm to that of two veterans who don't give up a single second of screen time.
In 2022, the series' premiere placed her at the center of the debate over period dramas. The American press praised her performance as a steady anchor amid opulent sets. But Jacobson kept a low profile outside mandatory promotional events. She has no interest in unnecessary media noise.
Her work on 2023 during the series' second season solidified her position in the production. The scripts called for the character to evolve toward more cynical and less romantic territory. She preferred to work with silences. She is an actress who understands that the television camera captures thought rather than exaggerated gestures.
Outside the HBO sets, she has selectively kept her ties to the fashion world. In 2022, she starred in campaigns for luxury brands, always with a painterly aesthetic. She has no interest in becoming a digital celebrity. Her Instagram account is an archive of visual references and behind-the-scenes photos, with no trace of personal exhibitionism.
Filming for the third season of The Gilded Age began in July 2024. The shooting schedule included historic locations in Newport and studio work in New York, with a production budget of more than five million dollars per episode.
