Luciane Buchanan was born in Auckland with a cultural duality that shapes her outlook. She is the daughter of a Tongan mother and a father of Scottish descent. She studied psychology and drama at the University of Auckland before filming schedules took over her entire professional calendar.
In 2013, she landed her first significant role in the series The Blue Rose. It wasn't an easy road. She had to juggle auditions with jobs outside the industry while looking for a foothold in New Zealand's entertainment scene.
Her project The New Legends of Monkey in 2018 marked a big step up in scale. She played Tripitaka for two seasons. The show was filmed entirely in New Zealand, but its global distribution through streaming platforms put her on the radar of casting directors in the United States.
Anonymity was suddenly over.
Before moving on to major international productions, she appeared in Filthy Rich. There she played Kennedy Truebridge across 33 episodes. This stage helped her understand the rhythms of commercial television before facing multimillion-dollar budgets.
In 2023, The Night Agent premiered. The series racked up more than 160 million hours viewed in its first week on air. Buchanan plays Rose Larkin, a cybersecurity expert on the run from a political conspiracy.
Filming in Vancouver required intense physical preparation. She personally coordinated much of her own movement work with stunt performers to reduce the use of stunt doubles in the chase scenes. The gamble paid off, as critics praised her ability to sustain dramatic tension without falling back on the usual tropes of the action genre.
Writing is her way of controlling the narrative.
But Buchanan doesn't limit herself to performing other people's scripts. In 2024, she presented the short film Lea Tupu’anga (Mother Tongue). She wrote the script and made the Tongan language the core of the narrative. The project grew out of a personal need to reclaim her linguistic roots.
For the series Chief of War, she joined a cast led by Jason Momoa. The production focused on the unification of Hawaii in the 18th century. Her role in this Apple TV+ project reflects her interest in stories tied to Pacific identity.
In 2024 filming for the second season of The Night Agent moved production to locations in New York and Thailand. Buchanan's contract includes strict confidentiality clauses about the development of her character.
Nearly 800 million hours viewed in its first year made her main series one of the most-watched in the platform's history. The new episodes were produced on an estimated budget of $15 million per episode.
