Rachel House doesn't need to shout to get noticed.

She appears on screen with the look of someone who knows something you don't, and the frame suddenly fills up. Born in 1971 and raised in Kamo, a suburb of Whangarei in New Zealand, she carries a Māori heritage that shows in every gesture. Long before the general public knew her name, she was already a legend in her country's theater.

In 1992, she graduated from the New Zealand Drama School and began working the stages with a force that intimidated veteran actors. She wasn't chasing quick fame like daytime soap stars. She preferred the sweat of the stage and stage directing. In 2002, she had a supporting role in Whale Rider, and that's when the world realized her face had a natural gravitas that's hard to find in typical casting.

Acting was not her only priority, though. For years, she balanced performing with teaching and coaching actors. House understands the craft from the ground up, not from ego. So when a young director named Taika Waititi crossed her path, the result was explosive.

The Dry Humor of the Islands

Her professional relationship with Waititi began to take shape in Eagle vs Shark in 2007. But it was in 2010 with Boy that House showed her dry comedic talent was a lethal weapon. She doesn't rely on easy jokes. She relies on silence and a minimal expressiveness that gets laughs from pure discomfort.

In 2016, she played Paula in Hunt for the Wilderpeople and stole every scene she was in. That obsessive social worker with her motto of leaving no child behind became a viral sensation. Global audiences finally got to know the woman who could be both menacing and hilarious at the same time.

And the gamble paid off.

Disney came calling that same year to voice Grandma Tala in Moana. It was a different kind of role that revealed a tenderness she had kept under lock and key until then. In 2017, she landed in the Marvel universe with Thor: Ragnarok, playing Topaz. There, she shared scenes with Jeff Goldblum and didn't back down an inch in front of the Hollywood star.

The Camera on the Other Side

Nobody laughs at Terry.

In 2020, she voiced the accountant from the afterlife in Pixar's Soul and made an abstract character feel human. But House was already thinking about making the leap. After decades helping others find their characters, she decided it was time to take full control of the storytelling.

In 2024, she premiered her first feature as a director, The Mountain. Rather than chase a formulaic commercial hit, she chose to tell an intimate story about three children seeking healing on a sacred peak. She shot it at the foothills of Mount Taranaki, reconnecting with her roots and working with the production company Piki Films.

In 2023, she appeared in Next Goal Wins, and between 2022 and 2024 she was part of the cast of Heartbreak High, playing Woodsy. Her schedule is still packed, but her focus has shifted toward producing and developing stories that spotlight Indigenous identity without falling into paternalism.

The Mountain had a budget of five million New Zealand dollars and was shot entirely on location over five weeks.
