Lukita Maxwell was born in Jakarta in 2001 but grew up surrounded by the arid landscapes of Utah. Her training didn't begin at elite acting schools but in her family's living room, practicing with scripts she downloaded from the internet. Before turning twenty, she already knew her look didn't fit Hollywood's usual molds.
In 2021, she played Delilah in the HBO Max series Generation. It was a complex role where silence weighed as much as dialogue. But the series lasted only one season before the platform canceled it, a move that surprised the show's fans.
The industry is that cold.
Then came the casting call for Shrinking in 2023. Playing Alice meant tackling a script that mixed traumatic grief with the biting comedy of Apple TV+. Sharing scenes with Harrison Ford requires a kind of composure that few twenty-year-old actors show on a film set.
During filming of the first season, Maxwell decided that her character should not be a conventional annoying teenager. She chose to build Alice through restraint and simmering anger. The chemistry with Jason Segel worked because both understood that the humor comes from the deepest pain.
Critics praised her ability to hold a close-up without overacting.
Because in streaming cinema, economy of movement tends to be a rising value. Maxwell learned early that listening to your scene partner is far more important than waiting for your turn to deliver your line. In 2024 she returned for the second season of the series with a character arc far more focused on emotional autonomy.
Away from the spotlight, Maxwell spends hours on film photography. It's an obsession she brings into how she observes film sets and frames shots. In 2023, she appeared in the movie The Young Wife under the direction of Tayarisha Poe. It was an independent project that had its world premiere at the South by Southwest festival.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024 she made the leap to genre film with Afraid. In this horror thriller produced by Sony Pictures and Blumhouse, the conflict revolves around an artificial intelligence that takes control of a family home. The film's budget came to roughly $12 million, and it demanded far more intense physical work than her previous television dramas.
Filming her outdoor scenes was completed in under three weeks due to natural light restrictions at the locations chosen in California.
