Marko Zaror stands six feet four inches tall and moves with the lightness of a featherweight. He was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1978, and his martial arts training began almost before he could read. His mother was a black belt in karate, and she instilled dojo discipline in him from childhood.
Genetics did the rest of the work.
He moved to Mexico City with little money and plenty of determination to break into the film industry. There he worked as a delivery man and commercial model before his physique opened the doors of film sets. In 2003 he doubled for Dwayne Johnson in the action scenes of the movie The Rundown.
That experience in the Brazilian jungle gave him an inside look at how the Hollywood machine worked. But he wanted to be in front of the camera, not just taking hits for others. So he decided to return to his country to create his own opportunities.
In 2006 he starred in Kiltro under the direction of Ernesto Díaz Espinoza. It was marketed as South America's first martial arts movie and was a risky bet financed with private capital. The project grew out of the need to create a genre cinema that did not yet exist in the region.
And the gamble paid off.
Together they shot Mirageman in 2007, a cult film in which Zaror plays an urban vigilante in a homemade suit. The movie cost less than $100,000 and ended up winning awards at specialty film festivals in the United States. International audiences took notice of this Chilean star who could perform acrobatic kicks without wires or camera tricks.
Because his style is built on physical honesty. Zaror follows a strict ketogenic diet and trains twice a day even when he doesn't have a signed contract. He believes his body is a technical tool that must be permanently calibrated.
In 2010, he played Colombian prisoner Raúl Quinones in Undisputed 3. It was his first major villain role in an international production, and it forced him to show a very high level of technical skill opposite Scott Adkins. The shoot in Bulgaria lasted five weeks in harsh, bitterly cold conditions.
Robert Rodriguez called him for Machete Kills in 2013. The director was looking for an actor who could fight without the constant cuts in editing that hide weaknesses. Zaror played a murderous clone and shared scenes with Mel Gibson on the Texas set.
He is a precision machine built in the Andes.
In 2017, he appeared in the Marvel series The Defenders, and a year later he joined the cast of Alita: Battle Angel. On this latter production, he worked under the supervision of James Cameron and underwent motion capture to bring a cyborg to life. Digital technology could not hide his signature style of striking.
His mass-market breakthrough in theaters around the world came in 2023. In John Wick: Chapter 4, he played Chidi, the Marquis de Gramont's principal enforcer. He spent months in Berlin and Paris rehearsing choreography that included gunfire, falls down staircases, and hand-to-hand fights against Keanu Reeves.
The movie's stunt team praised his ability to repeat high-intensity takes without showing any sign of fatigue. Zaror, however, prefers to focus on the mechanics of movement and on how his weight affects the momentum of impacts. In 2024 he worked on the shoot of The Killer's Game alongside Dave Bautista on locations in Eastern Europe.
The production company Mandeville Films managed a budget of $40 million to complete the production of this final footage.
