Silence as a working tool

Martín Rodríguez never planned to become the face of Río de la Plata auteur cinema. In 2009, the release of El cuarto de Leo pulled him out of complete obscurity. He played a young man in the midst of a sexual identity crisis with a restraint few expected from a debut performer on the big screen.

That was the beginning of it all.

He had studied theater in San Juan, Argentina, but his move to Montevideo to film with Enrique Buchichio changed his work pace. At that time, directors were looking for faces not tainted by television. He fit the bill because he knew how to look into the camera without asking permission and without overacting the inner conflict.

But his move to Spain was not an immediate bed of roses. He spent time alternating auditions with smaller projects until his look began to fit stories with social weight. Because Rodríguez has a gift for seeming like someone else just by shifting his body's weight or the direction of his gaze.

Losing himself in the character

In 2018 he shot Zaniki under the direction of Gabriel Velázquez. It was a documentary-style project in which the actor immersed himself in the oral tradition and folklore of Castile and León. It wasn't just acting. It was disappearing into a culture that wasn't his own by birth.

And the gamble paid off.

His role in 20,000 species of bees in 2023 brought him back to the front line of international festivals. In Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren's film, he plays Borja. He is a character who breathes truth in a complex rural setting full of layers of silence. The film won the Silver Bear in Berlin and put Martín's name on the radar of European casting directors.

Audiences started recognizing him without quite knowing from where.

His move into big-budget productions for streaming platforms was the logical next step. In 2024 he appeared in Las largas sombras, a thriller directed by Clara Roquet. He shared the cast with Elena Anaya and Belén Cuesta in a story of secrets buried for decades. The shoot demanded a level of technical precision far removed from his beginnings in low-budget independent cinema.

The Rigor of Historical Drama

Also in 2024, he joined the cast of Hildegart, Paula Ortiz's bold large-scale historical drama. He plays a supporting role that is key to understanding the political and family tensions in the plot. The actor has become known for holding scenes without the need for big monologues, relying on physical presence.

Because his career isn't defined by popularity awards but by constant endurance in the industry. He has worked in Argentina, Uruguay and Spain, keeping a low profile that serves his characters well. He avoids unnecessary red carpets and prefers long rehearsal processes where every movement in the script is discussed.

The production of Hildegart had a budget of more than five million euros and was shot mainly on location in Madrid.
