Max Ryan didn't start his career rehearsing Shakespeare at a drama school. His first workplace was the motocross tracks of the United Kingdom, where he competed professionally. A serious crash on the track forced him off the bike, and he made his way in London as a model and commercial actor.
In 2001, Luc Besson gave him his first serious break in action films with Kiss of the Dragon. Ryan played a hitman whose physical presence intimidated without him needing to say a word. That film worked as the perfect calling card for casting directors looking for tough guys in Hollywood.
And the phone started ringing from across the Atlantic.
His big-budget breakthrough came in 2003 with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He played Dante and shared the set with Sean Connery during a shoot remembered for the flooding in Prague and the constant tension between the lead and the director. Ryan survived that chaos and made his character stand out in a film packed with visual effects.
In the following decade, his career moved between genre films and big-budget productions. In 2008, he worked under Paul W.S. Anderson on Death Race. There, he played Pachenko, a psychotic driver who served as the direct antagonist to Jason Statham.
The industry pegged him as a premium supporting actor for action roles. But in 2010, he decided to break that pattern by taking a role in Sex and the City 2. He played Rikard Spirit, an architect who seduced Kim Cattrall's character in the middle of the desert. It was a complete change of pace, aimed at shedding his image as a violent action man.
Not every commercial gamble paid off.
In 2014, he appeared in Rage alongside Nicolas Cage. The film received scathing reviews and had a very limited release in commercial theaters in Spain and the United States. This failure marked a turning point in how he understood the film business.
Ryan understood early on that relying on studio calls was a risky strategy. In 2016, he began getting involved in screenwriting and in seeking financing for his own projects. He moved from being a hired actor to trying to get productions off the ground from the technical side.
In 2020, he focused on creating content through his own company. He stepped away from the red carpet spotlight to work on the development of The Hunchback, a much darker and more visceral version of the literary classic.
Financial independence became his absolute priority over the fleeting fame of blockbusters.
Between 2024 and 2025, his professional work focused on pre-production of The Foreigner. Filming was planned across several locations in Eastern Europe, with a technical budget of $12 million. The final distribution deal was signed with a delivery clause for the video-on-demand market in the first quarter of 2026.
