The voice nobody recognizes on the street

Melanie Zanetti recorded her first lines for Bluey in a Brisbane studio, never suspecting she would become the most famous mom on the planet. Her voice brings to life Chilli Heeler, an Australian Cattle Dog who is heard in millions of homes every day. But her career didn't start in front of a high-end condenser microphone.

She trained at the University of Southern Queensland.

In 2018, she accepted the role in the animated series out of career pragmatism. The industry in Australia is small, and actors often jump from a TV pilot to regional theater work just to get by. Zanetti recorded the first season in isolation, without physically interacting with the rest of the cast in the studio.

Nobody predicted the global phenomenon of Ludo Studio. The series was exported to Disney+ and its voice tone became a haven for parents around the world. But she still walked the sidewalks of Sydney without anyone stopping her to ask for a photo.

The Fan Phenomenon and Literature

Her visibility came from an unexpected route in 2020. She signed on to play Julia Mitchell in the film adaptation of Gabriel’s Inferno. It's a trilogy based on the novels by Sylvain Reynard, distributed through the platform Passionflix. The project aimed to reach a very specific and loyal readership.

And the gamble paid off.

Her professional relationship with her co-star, Giulio Berruti, generated a massive online buzz. Suddenly, a low-profile Australian actress had social media fan communities analyzing every frame of the films. Filming of the sequels stretched into 2022 under a media pressure she had never experienced in her previous independent film work.

But her success in romantic streaming did not change her roadmap in genre cinema.

Shadows and Physical Filmmaking

Early on, she appeared in Battle of the Damned (2013) alongside Dolph Lundgren. It was an action and zombie production shot in Malaysia. There she learned that physical filmmaking demands a technical endurance that acting schools rarely teach in their programs. She returned to fantasy with Raven’s Hollow in 2022, playing Charlotte in a gothic tale about Edgar Allan Poe.

In 2023, she joined the cast of Head Count. It's a heist thriller directed by the Burghart brothers. In this film she plays Jo, a character who moves away from the innocence of her earlier roles to explore a harsher, more criminal storyline. The shoot took place on desert locations that demanded complete control of emotional continuity under harsh weather conditions.

Zanetti maintains her residence in Australia but travels to the United States regularly for auditions for international projects. In 2024, she took part in the shoot of The Surfer, a production filmed in Western Australia where she shares the bill with Nicolas Cage. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival after a post-production process that dragged on for several months.

During the recording sessions for the third season of Bluey, technicians scheduled the voice blocks in four-hour shifts to prevent vocal cord fatigue.
