He was 57 years old when he stood in front of a professional camera for the first time. It was in 2002 to shoot Samurai Rebellion (The Twilight Samurai) under the direction of Yoji Yamada. He played a ragged, sick warrior who had to face the protagonist in a claustrophobic final duel.
That debut broke the mold of the Japanese film industry. He won the awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best New Actor the same year. And he did it without having studied acting or following the traditional methods of theater schools.
His technique came from the mud.
From the 1960s onward, Tanaka explored the limits of the body through Butoh. But his approach was always different from that of his contemporaries because he chose to move away from conventional theaters. In 1985, he founded an agricultural commune in the mountains of Yamanashi to connect human movement with the cycle of the harvests.
He believes the body is an archive of the earth's memory. So when he shoots a film, he doesn't act in the literary sense of the word. He simply brings his physical presence into the frame. Before accepting a role, he usually asks about the weather and the type of soil where the scene will be shot.
Filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda drew on this restraint in 2008 for Still Walking.
His leap into major international productions happened without changing his life philosophy one bit. In 2013, he played Lord Kira in 47 Ronin. It was a massive-budget shoot where his presence stood out for an almost unsettling stillness amid all the digital effects.
Four years later, in 2017, he took part in Blade Runner 2049. Denis Villeneuve was looking for a gaze that could convey centuries of history without the need for a script. And Tanaka delivered it in a single sequence.
The industry values his ability to avoid filling the space with noise.
In 2021, he starred in Hokusai, playing the famous painter in his old age. The film focuses on an obsession with capturing nature before dying. It's a role that seems written for him. Tanaka shares with the artist that tireless pursuit of truth through obsessive observation.
His collaboration with Wim Wenders in 2023 for Perfect Days is his most stripped-down work. He plays a homeless man who performs an almost invisible dance among the trees of a Tokyo park. There is no music or dialogue to explain where it comes from to the viewer.
The contract for that movie was closed in less than a week.
Tanaka still lives on his farm in Yamanashi when he isn't on a film set. He gets up before dawn to work the land and keeps up a physical routine that lets him keep dancing at 80 years old. He turns down most of the scripts that reach him unless he finds an organic connection with the story's setting.
Filming his role in the series The Sympathizer in 2024 required a technical setup of three fixed cameras to capture his improvised movements.
