Moses Chan landed in Hong Kong in 1994 with a suitcase full of clothes and no intention of becoming the highest-paid actor on television. He made his film debut that same year in Twenty Something. But that debut was a mirage of easy fame that ended quickly.
For nearly a decade he took supporting roles in B-movies and productions nobody remembers. His international model look didn't fit the local hero standards of the era. Back then, directors wanted more classic faces and less gravelly voices.
Nobody bet on his range.
The desert trek ended when the TVB network decided to give him a chance on the small screen. It was a risky bet for a man who barely mastered the nuances of Cantonese after years living in Australia. But audiences connected with his naturalness, almost by accident.
In 2004, War and Beauty arrived and the rules of the game changed forever in the Asian entertainment industry. Moses played Hung Mo with a restraint that earned him the respect of even the fiercest critics. That series was not only a ratings hit but also redefined the period drama in Hong Kong.
From there, multimillion-dollar contracts started piling up on his desk. He won the Best Actor award in 2007 for his role in Heart of Greed. That was the moment he stopped being just a pretty face and became the cornerstone of the chain.
The industry is cruel to those who age.
But Moses knew how to manage his public image off the set with surgical precision. In 2013, he married actress Aimee Chan in Paris, and that union strengthened his image as a family man and a steady presence. This side of him gave him access to luxury advertising campaigns that other actors of his generation lost due to personal scandals.
His passion for coffee is no bored celebrity's whim. In 2016, he founded his own brand, Blooms Coffee, and got involved in every detail of the roasting process. So while others were investing in nightclubs, he preferred the aroma of carefully selected beans from his travels around the world.
In 2022, he returned to medical drama with Big White Duel II, playing a surgeon with a complicated past. It was a big-budget production that aimed to recapture the glory of the golden age of cable television. And the viewership numbers on streaming platforms confirmed that his name still sold subscriptions.
The work never stops.
For the shoot of Narcotic Heroes in 2023, he had to undergo a noticeable physical transformation to bring a drug trafficker to life. It was a stripped-down, direct role that steered clear of the usual theatrical flourishes found in television dramas. In 2024 he signed on to new suspense projects under the TVB label with a contract worth 30 million Hong Kong dollars a year.
