Nam Ji-hyun started working when most children still can't even tie their shoes. She was seven years old when she appeared in the drama Say You Love Me in 2004. It wasn't a summer whim or a throwaway cameo to fill the frame.
That was the beginning of a career that would not slow down.
For a decade, she was the child version of nearly every major actress in South Korea. She won awards for playing girls who suffered or survived in historical dramas such as Queen Seondeok in 2009. But the risk of being stuck in the perpetual role of the lead's daughter was real.
She studied Psychology at Sogang University while continuing to act. She didn't put her books aside for scripts, because she wanted to understand the mental structure of characters from an academic standpoint. That intellectual foundation helped her make the transition to adult roles without the typical traumas of child prodigies.
In 2016, Shopping King Louie arrived. It was her first leading role in a big-audience romantic comedy, where she played a country girl. The Seoul industry often devours its child stars, but Nam broke that pattern with an unusually natural technical skill.
And the gamble paid off.
Shortly after, she filmed Suspicious Partner in 2017. In this production, she had to carry a legal plot mixed with romance. The series' success cemented her name in the offices of producers looking for actresses who could handle fast, complex dialogue.
But her real breakthrough came with 100 Days My Prince in 2018. This historical series reached a screen share of 14 percent in its final episode. It was one of the most-watched dramas in the history of Korean cable television up to that point, and it proved her name could sell advertising.
In 2020, she decided to step away from conventional romance. She starred in 365: Repeat the Year, a survival thriller with time travel in which she played a webtoon artist. It was a risky choice that moved her decisively away from the sweet image of her early days on public television.
Her project Little Women in 2022 marked an absolute shift in her filmography. Under director Kim Hee-won, she brought to life Oh In-kyung, a journalist struggling with alcoholism and obsessed with the truth. It's a restrained character who demands a level of gestural control that Nam had not explored until then.
Her ability to hold close-ups without blinking was key.
In 2024, she returned to the screen with Good Partner. She plays a rookie lawyer at a divorce firm where the storyline focuses on technical legal conflicts over romantic subplots. The series' script was written by a real lawyer named Choi Yu-na to ensure the accuracy of the cases.
The production of this latest series was filmed on a tight budget by SBS standards. Nam Ji-hyun signed on to this project after reading only the first two episodes of the original script in an office in Gangnam.
