Nao Toyama didn't need any connections to break into the Japanese voice acting industry. In 2010, she landed her first major role in Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto, and from that moment her name began circulating through production offices in Tokyo. She wasn't the deepest or the highest voice in her class.
The technical direction changed everything.
Her ability to modulate her tone allowed her to move from energetic characters to melancholy profiles without viewers noticing the seam. In 2014, she played Chitoge Kirisaki in Nisekoi, and that job redefined her position in the market. The series demanded a frantic comedic pace that Toyama delivered with a mechanical precision unusual for someone with so little experience.
Many voice actors get stuck in the teenager archetype, but she sought out different nuances. In 2015, she joined the cast of Kantai Collection, taking on multiple roles at the same time. It was a vocal endurance test that few professionals dare to take on in their first five years in the business.
And then came music.
Toyama didn't settle for just voicing dialogue. In 2016, she joined the Macross Delta project as a member of the Walküre group, and her music career took on a different dimension. The group sold thousands of copies and filled venues such as the Yokohama Arena. But she wanted to test her own signature sound outside of ensemble roles.
In 2017, she released her first solo single, titled True Destiny, under the FlyingDog label. The Japanese music industry is relentless with actresses who try to sing, but Toyama managed to sell more than ten thousand copies in her first week. That same year, she also provided vocals for the soundtrack of Isekai Shokudou.
Sometimes success lies not in the shout but in the whisper. In 2018, she accepted the role of Rin Shima in Yuru Camp, and her performance moved away from the genre's usual excesses. It's a celebrity who calls for restraint and a very specific control of breath to convey calm.
The series became a cultural phenomenon in Japan.
As a result, the industry began to see her as a safe bet for projects seeking emotional depth. In 2020, she returned to her role in the second season of Oregairu, where the romantic drama demanded a vulnerability she had never shown before. Specialist critics praised her ability to crack her voice in tense moments without losing the character's pitch.
In 2024, she appeared in season three of Sound! Euphonium, voicing Nozomi Kasaki. It's a role she has carried since 2016, and it shows the natural evolution of her range toward more mature, measured tones. There's no trace of the teenage energy of her early days in her recent studio work.
Her schedule for 2024 included recording new tracks for the Yuru Camp Season 3 project and several motion capture sessions for video games. Her work on Special 7: Special Crime Investigation Unit in earlier years had already signaled her interest in cold, clipped police roles. Her contract with the agency Intention remains in effect following her departure from Arts Vision.
