Natasia Demetriou joined the set of What We Do in the Shadows in 2019 with a centuries-old wig and an aristocratic bad temper nobody expected. She wasn't trying to please the average viewer of mainstream networks. Her humor came from the basements of London and a tradition of characters on the edge of a nervous breakdown.
The daughter of a Cypriot father and an English mother, she grew up in a home where exaggeration was everyday language. She studied at the University of Leeds and then honed her craft on the stand-up circuit. But her real education was total failure in rooms with three people in them.
There was no master plan.
In 2018, British industry finally stopped ignoring her thanks to Stath Lets Flats. Working side by side with her brother Jamie Demetriou, she played Sophie, a character walking the fine line between naivety and profound stupidity. The series won three BAFTA Awards in 2020 and put her name on the desks of Los Angeles studios.
The role of Nadja in the television adaptation of What We Do in the Shadows in 2019 changed the game for her. Playing a 500-year-old vampire trapped in a New York suburb allowed her to display a range of screams, sneers and a overwhelming physicality. The series reached 50 episodes in 2024 and remained one of the pillars of FX for six consecutive seasons.
Despite her massive success, she never abandoned her roots in the rawest sketch comedy. In 2019, she premiered Ellie & Natasia alongside her frequent collaborator Ellie White. The show started as a half-hour special and became a full series in 2022 because BBC executives couldn't ignore the viewing figures on its digital platform.
Comedy is a dirty job.
But film also knocked on her door with big-budget projects. In 2023, she voiced Wingnut in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and appeared in Wonka under the direction of Paul King. In the latter, she played Lottie Bell, a laundry worker in Victorian times who was part of the comedic core of a $125 million production.
Demetriou prefers to write her own dialogue whenever her contract allows it. In 2024, her influence in the British industry translated into a bigger role in the executive production of her projects. She doesn't just read what others write, because she understands that the rhythm of her comedy depends on the pause and the awkward gesture.
Before filming, she always reviews the structure of the jokes with almost surgical precision. That obsession with detail is what sets her apart from other comedians of her generation who rely too heavily on pure improvisation. Her characters seem chaotic but are calculated down to the millimeter.
Laughter is an exact science.
In 2025, her schedule was filled with three voice-over projects and a new collaboration with Mark Proksch's production company. Syndication data for her series in the United States suggests her image rights income will keep growing passively over the next decade. Filming of her latest appearance in Toronto lasted exactly twenty-two days.
