Oslo is where Natassia Malthe was born in 1974, to a mixed Norwegian and Malaysian heritage that would shape her screen career. Before stepping onto a set, she trained at some of the most prestigious dance academies in London and Scotland. The strict discipline of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet gave her a almost athletic physicality, which she would later use to dodge punches on camera.
Dance was her first serious discipline.
But her film career took a different path when she decided to move to Canada to try her luck in modeling and advertising. In 1996, she landed her first credited role in the series Viper, and from that moment her name began circulating in casting offices in Vancouver. She wasn't looking for Shakespearean drama; she felt at home in movement and pure action.
Her appearance in Lake Placid in 1999 was a sign of what was to come, as fantasy became her natural habitat. In 2005, she played Typhoid Mary in Elektra and proved she could keep pace with a Marvel blockbuster alongside Jennifer Garner. That shoot opened the doors to the video game adaptations that were about to flood the home market.
Malthe's career is inevitably tied to Uwe Boll. In 2007, she took the lead role in BloodRayne II: Deliverance, replacing Kristanna Loken and taking on the challenge of playing a dhampir in the Wild West. It was a risky bet that pigeonholed her in the direct-to-video market, but it also guaranteed her steady work for almost a decade.
And the bet paid off financially.
She reprised the role in 2011 in BloodRayne: The Third Reich, where the story moved to World War II. In between, she appeared in DOA: Dead or Alive in 2006, playing Kasumi, and solidified her image as an action heroine capable of performing her own choreography. But the excess of low-budget productions eventually wore out the patience of specialized critics.
The industry isn't always kind to action actresses.
In 2013, she starred in Vikingdom, a film shot in Malaysia that aimed to compete with Hollywood's big historical epics. The technical result was questionable, but she maintained her professionalism on a complex shoot full of digital effects and heavy armor. Malthe always met her deadlines and physical requirements without complaining about the conditions on set.
Malthe's professional life took a dramatic turn in 2017 when she decided to break her silence about her personal experience in the industry. She joined the voices that spoke out about systematic abuse in Hollywood, and her testimony was one of the most raw from that period. This step forward meant a voluntary distance from the spotlight while the justice system processed the complaints filed.
In 2018, she appeared in the film Alpha, playing Rho under the direction of Albert Hughes. It was a production of greater artistic weight than her previous work and moved away from the B-movie aesthetic that had defined her years in Vancouver. The film was shot on location in Canada and Iceland to recreate the Ice Age on a budget of $51 million.
From that point on, her appearances became much more selective and spaced out over time. She focused on personal projects and on keeping a private life away from the tabloids that had chased her so relentlessly during the New York trials. Malthe spends much of the year in Los Angeles, although she maintains ties to the Norwegian art scene through occasional collaborations.
In 2021, her name appeared again in the production credits of independent projects seeking funding in European markets. Natassia Malthe has more than fifty titles in her official filmography since her debut in the mid-nineties. Her most recent registered appearance in a large-scale production was the role of Rho in the prehistoric drama distributed by Sony Pictures.
