Niall Horan didn't know how to play the guitar in a formal way when he auditioned for The X Factor in 2010. He was sixteen years old and had a confidence that bordered on recklessness. That teenager from Mullingar ended up joining One Direction because the judges saw a charisma that the rest of the world would take years to understand.
The machinery of the music industry swallowed him up fast. For five years he lived in a bubble of sold-out stadiums and paparazzi chases. But while his bandmates chased the perfect falsetto or urban style, he found refuge in the chords of Eagles and Fleetwood Mac.
That obsession with classic rock was his ticket in.
Horan learned to write songs in hotel rooms between concerts. He was less interested in the glitter of sequins than in the structure of a good singer-songwriter track. So when the band went on an indefinite break in 2016, his path was clearer than the others'.
In 2016, the group went on hiatus, and many expected Horan to fade away or try to copy the electronic pop of the radio. Instead, he released This Town, an acoustic ballad he recorded in a single take. The song reminded listeners more of an Irish pub than a London club.
His first solo album was titled Flicker and came out in 2017. It was a statement of intent in which folk ruled over the synthesizer. It sold 152,000 copies in its first week in the United States alone, a fact that silenced those who considered him the weak link of the quintet.
And the gamble paid off.
Because Horan understood that his audience valued honesty over excessive production. In 2020, he released Heartbreak Weather just as the world was shutting down due to the health crisis. It was bad luck on the logistics side that ruined his plans for a world tour, but it didn't damage his reputation as a studio songwriter.
The album debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and Ireland. But being unable to perform it live pushed him to lock himself away once again to write about anxiety and calm.
With the release of The Show in 2023, the musician explored denser sounds and productions inspired by 1970s California. He was no longer just the boy band guy. He took a seat in the chair of The Voice as a mentor and showed a technical knowledge that many critics had underestimated.
His business side also grew far from the microphones. He founded Modest! Golf in 2016 to represent young sports talent. The company manages professional careers and organizes tournaments on the European circuit, with revenue that grows every year.
In 2024, his world tour played arenas across three continents with a band of top-tier session musicians. The lighting production for those concerts cost several million euros per leg. He wrapped up the final stretch of dates with a crew of sixty full-time staff on the payroll.
