Nicoletta Braschi moved to Rome from Cesena at twenty years old to study at the National Academy of Dramatic Arts. In 1980, she met Roberto Benigni, and that encounter shaped her personal life as well as her constant presence on European screens. She made her film debut in Tu mi turbi in 1983, directed by the man who would become her husband years later.
Jim Jarmusch cast her in Down by Law in 1986. That role as an Italian woman in an American cult film gave her a visibility few expected at the time. Because Braschi never chased the fame of traditional red carpets and always preferred control over her characters.
And it worked.
In 1991, she co-founded the production company Melampo Cinematografica with Benigni to manage their own projects. This independence allowed them to make films such as Johnny Stecchino and Il mostro without interference from major studios. Braschi not only acted but also oversaw budgets and shoot logistics from the office.
Her international breakthrough came with Life Is Beautiful in 1997. The film grossed more than 230 million dollars worldwide and won three Academy Awards. She played Dora, the schoolteacher who voluntarily enters a concentration camp out of love for her family.
But massive success brought creative pressure that was hard to manage.
Following the impact of the awards, the couple embarked on Pinocchio in 2002. It was a high-budget production that failed to win over international critics. Despite distribution problems in the United States, the film kept Italian audiences interested in the actress and her ability to finance risky projects.
In 2005, she shot La tigre e la neve, set against the backdrop of the Iraq War. It was her last major film collaboration with Benigni before a long break from the camera. European critics began to question her creative dependence on the director, but she responded by turning to the stage.
For years, Braschi stepped away from the spotlight to focus on classical and contemporary theater. In 2013, she received the Ennio Flaiano Prize for her stage career. But the movies called her back through a new generation of Italian directors who wanted her for less commercial stories.
In 2018 she appeared in Lazzaro Felice by Alice Rohrwacher. It was a key supporting role that brought her back to the Cannes Film Festival after a long absence. At this stage, she prefers scripts that explore Italy's social reality from an almost dreamlike perspective.
Management of her image rights remains centralized in her Rome office.
In 2021, she received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival. It recognized four decades of work in the European film industry. Her last recorded public appearance was at the David di Donatello Awards in 2024.
