Omar Ayuso

Omar Ayuso never attended any official acting school or spent years as an extra before breaking into screens in eighty countries. At just twenty years old, and enrolled in the second year of Audiovisual Communication at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, he went to a casting almost out of youthful habit.

In October 2018, the release of Elite blew past every audience forecast. Omar Shanaa, a young Muslim man torn between his family's grocery business and his secret exploration of his sexuality, multiplied his social media following by millions within weeks.

Nobody prepares you for that kind of noise.

That overwhelming fame came with a suffocating label. The romantic storyline he shared with Arón Piper sparked global attention, but it threatened to lock his image into the mold of a streaming teen heartthrob. So he decided to keep his distance from the commercial machine and focus on learning the craft from the technical ground up.

From School Uniform to the Director's Clapperboard

In 2021, he stepped away from the spotlight to get behind the camera. He founded his own independent production company with classmates from college and financed the shoot of his first narrative short film, Matar a la madre, serving as both writer and director.

For the cast, he signed Ana Fernández Villaverde and commissioned the costume design from Palomo Spain during a shoot of just three days in Madrid. The plot dissected the tense encounter between a mature woman and a young man inside a fast-food restaurant.

And the move worked as a statement of intent.

In April 2022, he announced his exit from the series after completing the fifth season. He needed some air outside of fictional classrooms. But the creators called him back for the seventh and eighth seasons, aired between 2023 and 2024, a return conditioned on a dramatic arc centered on trauma and mental health that definitively closed his chapter on the production.

The Escape Into Independent Film

Acting on stage was his trial by fire. In January 2023, he made his stage debut at the Teatro Pavón in Madrid with El sonido oculto, a psychological production by Adam Rapp directed by Juan Carlos Rubio, in which he shared the bill with Toni Acosta.

There was no digital editing to fix doubts or second takes. Sustaining a dense dialogue in front of the audience for an hour and a half demands a physical discipline that fragmented shoots never teach.

That same year, he premiered the arthouse feature On the Go, directed by Julia de Castro and María Gisèle Royo. Shot on 16mm film, the movie competed at the Locarno Film Festival with a raw portrait of nighttime friendship and emotional dependence.

In 2024, Javier Giner cast him in the drama series Yo, adicto. His work in the supporting cast earned him a nomination for Breakthrough Actor at the Actors Union Awards, competing with veterans of the Spanish scene.

In 2025, he went straight from filming Silencio, a fiction film directed by Eduardo Casanova, to the musical series Mariliendre.

In 2026, he completed his role in the feature film Esta soledad and joined the cast of El castillo. To fund his next auteur piece in Madrid, the production plan set a fixed budget of 48,000 euros covered entirely by microloans and private capital, with no early state aid applied for.
