The resignation that changed everything

Özge Gürel had no plans to become an actress when she enrolled in Business at Istanbul University. But business management bored her to tears. So she dropped out and threw herself into acting studies with no safety net.

Before stepping onto a film set, she spent months training in acting workshops. In 2010, she landed her first role in Kızım Nerede? after a rather tense casting process. She had no prior experience in front of the cameras, and her name was not listed with any prestigious agency.

And the gamble paid off.

During 2013, she appeared in Medcezir, one of the most expensive productions in Turkey at the time. The part was small, but it taught her how big-budget shoots worked. She learned to handle the pressure of tight delivery deadlines in an industry that chews up actors at a dizzying pace.

The cherry phenomenon

The premiere of Kiraz Mevsimi in 2014 changed her status in the Turkish industry. Öykü Acar, her character, won over audiences because it blended clumsiness and charm in a very natural way. The series sold broadcast rights to dozens of countries and put her face on billboards across much of Europe and Latin America.

On the set of that production, she met Serkan Çayoğlu. The relationship between them went beyond the fiction and became a constant target for society press in Istanbul. But they kept a low profile for years to keep media noise from affecting their work contracts.

During 2017, she shot Dolunay. Her chemistry with Can Yaman was so obvious that producers repeated the formula three years later. In 2020, they starred in Bay Yanlış, a romantic comedy that had ratings problems in Turkey but took the international streaming market by storm.

It wasn't all red carpets.

Exile in drama and private life

In 2019, she decided to step away from light comedy and film Annem. In this movie, she played a daughter with a traumatic relationship with her mother. It was a grueling six-week shoot in rural locations where the weather complicated many of the outdoor scenes. Critics praised her ability to carry the dramatic weight without relying on the usual genre tricks.

In July 2022, she married Serkan Çayoğlu in Germany in an intimate ceremony. A month later, they held a second wedding in Verona, Italy, with a guest list of more than one hundred people. The cost of the wedding at the Italian villa was one of the most talked-about details in the financial press covering the entertainment industry.

And the pace didn't let up.

In 2023, she joined the cast of Sipahi, an action and espionage series that demanded a different kind of physical preparation from her earlier roles. During that year, she had to learn basic self-defense techniques for the choreographed fight scenes. The production was canceled after just a few episodes due to low ratings in the late-night time slot.

For the project Savrulan Zaman in 2024, the actress signed a contract that included specific promotion clauses in Arab markets. The production was planned with a budget of two million Turkish lira per episode.
