Özgü Namal didn't need a slow transition to dominate Turkish screens. In 1997, she was already performing on the stage of the Enis Fosforoğlu theater while finishing her acting studies at the Istanbul University State Conservatory. Her entry into commercial television was sharp and direct, without the usual hesitation of someone just starting out.
Her real breakout came between 2003 and 2005 with her role as Elif Eylül in Kurtlar Vadisi. That political and criminal thriller brought the country to a standstill every Thursday night. Namal played a lawyer caught in a web of espionage and state-linked mafias that redefined how Turkish audiences consumed fiction.
Her ability to hold a close-up set her apart from her contemporaries.
Before shooting Mutluluk in 2007, she already had the respect of the most demanding critics. In that feature film, she played a young woman who falls victim to an archaic honor culture in rural areas. For this role, she received the Best Actress award at the Antalya Film Festival, the most important prize in the country. The film drew 1.8 million viewers in Turkish theaters and was exported across much of Europe.
But real money and mass fame came with the adaptation of Orhan Kemal's work. Between 2009 and 2011, she starred in Hanımın Çiftliği, a period drama with a per-episode budget that tripled the industry average at the time.
At the peak of her career, Namal decided to cut ties with the industry. After wrapping the series Merhamet in 2014, she moved away from the Istanbul spotlight. She relocated to a farm in Köyceğiz with her husband, Serdar Oral, seeking a life far from scripts and red carpets.
The industry took her final retirement for granted.
During this time, she turned down multimillion-dollar contracts and projects designed specifically for her comeback. Her life took a tragic turn in 2020 when her husband died of a heart attack. Namal was left alone with their two children, and the media kept a total silence, respecting a period of mourning that seemed to keep her away from film and TV sets forever.
For her, acting was never about seeking public validation but a working tool. So her disappearance from TV series credits was not a marketing move but a firm, personal decision.
The contract was signed under strict secrecy.
In 2023, production company Gold Film announced that Özgü Namal would return to television with Kızıl Goncalar. The project immediately sparked controversy in Turkey for its portrayal of the clash between Islamic religious sects and secular sectors of society. Namal took on the role of Meryem, a woman who cleans houses for a wealthy family while trying to save her daughter from a forced marriage within a closed community.
Filming of the series in 2024 faced attacks and permit cancellations from the Ministry of Family and Social Services due to its political content. Despite state censorship, the project remained on the air.
Namal currently commands one of the highest per-episode fees in Turkish private television. Her contract stipulates strict filming schedules so she can look after her family in Istanbul.
The series Kızıl Goncalar closed its first run of episodes with a 22% audience share in the commercial sector.
