Park Ji-hwan doesn't have the porcelain face that Seoul's film industry usually exports. His broad jaw and that look that seems always on the verge of exploding earned him his first jobs in theater long before he made his big screen debut in 2006 with The City of Violence. For a decade, he worked in the shadows of the industry, playing low-level thugs and nameless criminals.
And audiences took a while to learn his name.
Before moving into action films, he spent years on stage honing a physique that naturally intimidates. But the reality is that Park Ji-hwan is a method actor who searches for human detail even in the most despicable characters. In 2016, he appeared in A Violent Prosecutor and began to get noticed in bigger-budget productions.
Nobody expected a fictional gangster to be so likable.
In 2017, the moment that changed his career arrived. He played Jang I-soo in The Outlaws and built a criminal with so many layers of humor and pathos that he ended up stealing every scene from the leads. The film was a massive hit, with 6.8 million moviegoers in South Korea alone. Park Ji-hwan turned a supporting character who was meant to disappear into a key part of the franchise.
He reprised the role in The Roundup in 2022 and again in 2024 with The Roundup: Punishment. Audiences didn't go to theaters just to see Ma Dong-seok's punches. They went to watch Park's character try to survive life's blows with a mix of street-smart scrappiness and bad luck.
Comedy saved him from being typecast.
After years of playing tough guys, he decided it was time to show a different side. In 2022, he took on the role of Jung In-kwon in the series Our Blues. He played a single father who sells fish at a market in Jeju and carries a violent past he tries to leave behind for the sake of his son.
The industry now turns to him for projects that demand dramatic weight, not just physical presence. In 2022 he joined the cast of Hansan: Rising Dragon to play Na Dae-yong. It was a large-scale war production that grossed more than $50 million at the box office. His ability to handle period language showed that his range went far beyond the alleys of Seoul.
In 2024, he took part in the historical series Queen Woo, playing Mugol. This TVING project required a major technical effort, with a production design that recreated the Goguryeo period. Park Ji-hwan shot much of his outdoor scenes in extreme weather conditions.
But his schedule doesn't stop at period dramas.
In 2024, his involvement in the police comedy Seoul Busters was also confirmed. The shoot for this series was planned to combine physical action with a fast-paced script. The production company allocated a budget of several billion won to ensure the quality of the urban chase sequences.
Park Ji-hwan signed his contract for the fourth installment of his most famous franchise with a profit-sharing clause. The film The Roundup: Punishment reached 10 million tickets sold in just 22 days of release. The actor shot his final interior scenes on a closed set in Gyeonggi Province.
