Patsy Kensit was four years old when she sold frozen peas on British television.
That Bird's Eye commercial in 1972 marked the start of a public exposure that would never let up. Two years later, she was already sharing the screen with Mia Farrow in Jack Clayton's version of The Great Gatsby. Before she turned ten, she already knew exactly what an international film set was like.
British industry embraced her as a child prodigy of a generation hungry for fresh faces for quick consumption. But the price of starting so young tends to be paid in adulthood.
In 1983, she founded Eighth Wonder. The group did better in Japan and on European dance floors than on the traditional UK sales charts. Music was a profitable detour.
I'm Not Scared was her creative peak under the production of Pet Shop Boys in 1988. But movies remained her main goal despite the media noise surrounding her image as a pop star. In 1986, she starred in Absolute Beginners alongside David Bowie in an attempt to revive the British musical.
And the bet never quite paid off at the box office.
Action movies cast her as the romantic face of Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon 2. It was 1989, and Kensit seemed destined for the front lines of Hollywood. But the American industry is a meat grinder for foreign faces that don't fit the exact mold of the era. Her role in Richard Donner's saga was her biggest commercial showcase before she returned to Europe.
Her private life overshadowed her film reviews. She married Dan Donovan, then Jim Kerr of Simple Minds, and later Liam Gallagher at the height of Britpop. The British tabloid press made her a recurring face on their covers throughout the 1990s.
That overexposure damaged her credibility as a dramatic actress at a time when independent film was looking for profiles less tainted by tabloid fame. She worked on minor projects and TV movies that barely traveled beyond the British Isles.
And the spotlight definitively moved away from the movie screen.
In 2004, she decided to change strategy to save her career. She joined the cast of Emmerdale to play Sadie King. It was a smart move to secure steady income and professional stability after years of personal turbulence. She played that role until 2006.
In 2007, she joined the medical drama Holby City as Faye Morton. She stayed on the series until 2010 and returned for a special episode in 2019. Her ability to connect with audiences of daily productions secured a longevity that many stars of her generation lost along the way.
British television was her lifeline against being forgotten. Because Kensit understood that prestige is secondary when it comes to surviving in a profession that punishes female aging.
In 2023, she joined EastEnders to play Emma Harding. She also appeared in an episode of Death in Paradise that same year. Her career includes more than fifty film and television credits since her childhood debut in the seventies.
Filming of her final scenes on the series EastEnders took place at the Elstree studios during the winter of 2022.
