Paul Hogan painted the Sydney Harbour Bridge before anyone knew his name. He wasn't chasing fame, but television found him almost by accident. In 1971, he entered a talent contest called New Faces with the sole aim of making fun of the judges to their faces.
That Australian boldness fascinated audiences. Hogan was neither a method actor nor a studio heartthrob. He was a street-smart guy who knew how to connect with the average citizen through dry, direct humor. So he carved out his own space.
The Paul Hogan Show stayed on the air for an entire decade. There he perfected the character he would later export to the whole world.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1986, Hogan decided Australia was too small for him. He wrote the screenplay for Crocodile Dundee on a budget of nearly nine million dollars. It was a risky figure for the time for an independent production. But the result broke every industry rule.
The film grossed 328 million dollars worldwide. Hogan not only starred in the movie but also kept absolute creative control over the project. Hollywood tried to buy the rights to the brand on several occasions. He always refused to sell his essence for a quick paycheck.
In 1988, he shot the sequel to cash in on the box office buzz. The reviews were mediocre, but ticket sales responded with unusual strength. Hogan became the ambassador of an Australia sold as an adventure theme park full of tough guys with good hearts.
But massive success often comes at a very high price in a comedian's career.
Hogan tried to break out of the mold in 1990 with Almost an Angel. It was a monumental miscalculation that critics never forgave. Audiences didn't want to see the actor playing a redeemed criminal with spiritual overtones. They wanted the fur hat and the bush knife.
Typecasting is a golden cage.
He tried to recapture past glory with Crocodile Dundee II in 1994 and a third installment of the crocodile hunter in 2001. Neither project came close to the cultural impact of the original. The industry began to see him as a relic of the 1980s.
His personal life also made tabloid covers. His divorce from his first wife and his marriage to his co-star Linda Kozlowski fueled media fascination. He also had legal battles with the Australian tax office over alleged tax evasion.
Years of minor projects and sporadic appearances at nostalgia events followed. In 2020, he released The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee, poking fun at his own professional decline. In the film, he plays himself, trying to save his reputation before being knighted by the Crown.
Hogan has lived in Los Angeles for decades, far from the noise of the major studios. In 2023, his Venice home was put up for sale for five million dollars after several health problems were confirmed that severely limited his mobility.
