The Risk of the First Time

Payal Rajput landed in Hyderabad without speaking a word of Telugu. She came from honing her craft on Mumbai television (where she debuted in 2013 with the series Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke), but movies demanded a different kind of skin.

In 2018, she took on the role of Indu in RX 100. It was a character loaded with aggressive sexuality and ambiguous morality that broke box office records on a minimal budget.

And the gamble paid off.

Local critics didn't know how to categorize her, since she wasn't the typical passive heroine of southern cinema. But she chose to ignore the labels and moved into Punjabi cinema with Channa Mereya in 2017 before refocusing on the Tollywood market.

In 2019, she shot Venky Mama and Disco Raja. These were big-budget projects where she shared the screen with established stars (such as Venkatesh and Ravi Teja), striking a balance between commercial cinema and her own identity.

It wasn't all smooth sailing.

Many analysts noted that her image was getting stuck in femme fatale roles. So in 2020, she turned to the psychological thriller Anaganaga O Athidhi for the Aha streaming platform.

Back to the Mud

The real endurance test came with the shoot for Mangalavaaram in 2023. She worked again under director Ajay Bhupathi to play Shailu, a character who demanded grueling physical effort in rural settings.

During filming on location, she spent hours under the sun and performed action sequences with almost no stunt doubles. The film earned 150 million rupees in its first four days in theaters.

It was a bold statement.

In 2024, she released Rakshana. In this film, she played a police officer facing a network of religious crimes. Filming was delayed several times due to the production company's financial problems, but it was eventually completed after months of uncertainty.

Contracts and Realities

Rajput keeps her residence in Mumbai, although she spends most of her time in hotels in Hyderabad or Chennai. As a result, her life has been spent between airports and film sets for over a decade.

Her contract for the film Kirathaka included a forty-consecutive-day filming exclusivity clause.

The production budgets of her latest projects in 2024 are estimated at 200 million rupees per film.
