Peter Maffay was born in Brasov in 1949. He does not fit the typical profile of a German rock star, and that shows in his dry gaze in front of the camera. His family fled communist Romania in 1963 and settled in Bavaria. There he traded the violin for the guitar, because the noise helped him fit into a country that was not his own.
In 1970 he released Du. It was a massive hit that pigeonholed him in Schlager, the light music so popular on Central European radio. But Maffay hated the label of a sugary heartthrob. He sold 1.2 million copies of a single record in 1970 and spent the following years trying to make the public forget who he was.
His breakthrough came with Steppenwolf in 1979. That album put him on the map of hard rock and leather jackets. And the bet paid off.
From then on, his relationship with film was an extension of his public image. In 1987 he starred in Der Joker under the direction of Peter Patzak. He played a tough guy in an underworld story that aimed to exploit his quiet magnetism. The film was not a scriptwriting triumph, but it confirmed that Maffay had the face of a genre actor (the kind who says more when silent than when shouting).
In 1983 he created Tabaluga. What began as a concept for a children's album became a multimillion-dollar industry. The little green dragon moved from records to stages and finally to the big screen. Maffay understood before anyone else that intellectual property was the real engine of the entertainment industry.
The animated film Tabaluga hit theaters in 2018. He provided the voice and oversaw a production that aimed to compete with international standards. But his greatest contribution to film was not his voice, but his ability to finance projects that others considered too risky.
His career cannot be understood without risk.
He contributed to the soundtrack of Bis ans Ende der Welt in 1991, directed by Wim Wenders. That collaboration showed that his sensibility went beyond sold-out stadiums. Maffay always preferred to surround himself with creators who challenged his comfort zone, even if that meant taking hits from the specialized press.
The critics were merciless.
Despite the attacks from rock purists, the musician kept an iron discipline. In 2021 he released the album So weit, recorded during months of isolation. It was a raw work in which technical production was kept to a minimum so the voice could come through unfiltered. It is the kind of decision only someone who no longer has to prove anything to record executives would make.
In 2024 he closed his era of major tours with a farewell tour across Germany. The final concert in Leipzig drew thousands of fans from three different generations. Maffay holds the record for 20 albums at No. 1 on the German charts. His foundations in Germany, Spain and Romania currently run shelters for children facing social exclusion. The annual budget of these organizations exceeds several million euros, funded by private donations and royalties.
