Rachel Sennott was born in Connecticut in 1995 and learned early that anxiety could be profitable. During her time at New York University, she combined acting classes with stand-up nights in basement clubs where almost no one was paying attention. Her digital presence on Twitter became a testing ground for quick jokes about romantic failure and precarity.
In 2020, she starred in Shiva Baby. The film grew out of a college short and was shot on a tiny budget that demanded total efficiency. Sennott plays Danielle, a young woman trapped at a Jewish funeral where her ex-girlfriend and her secret lover both show up.
And the gamble paid off.
International critics took notice of her ability to carry intense close-ups. But Sennott didn't want to be just a face for independent auteur cinema. So she began building a network of contacts with filmmakers who shared her sharp take on reality.
Unlike many actors of her generation, she understands how production works from the inside. In 2022, she joined Bodies Bodies Bodies, a horror satire produced by A24. Her character provided the comic relief but also the emotional anchor of a story that dismantled Gen Z tropes.
That film grossed over $14 million in the United States. That financial backing gave her the confidence to make the leap into professional screenwriting alongside her frequent collaborator, Emma Seligman.
In 2023, Bottoms premiered. The premise stood out in contemporary Hollywood because it revived the spirit of 1990s raunchy comedies through a queer, violent lens. Sennott co-wrote the script and took one of the lead roles.
The script was a finely tuned piece of clockwork.
Because Sennott knows that creative control is the only way to avoid depending on traditional casting processes. That same year, she appeared in HBO's series The Idol. Although the production faced fierce criticism for its direction, Sennott's performance as a personal assistant was unanimously singled out as the only solid element of the footage.
In 2024, she played Rosie Shuster in Saturday Night, Jason Reitman's film about the origins of the legendary TV show. The role marked her definitive entry into the world of major studio productions that pursue prestige and box office success at the same time.
There's no room for error.
Her working method avoids excessive improvisation despite her stand-up background. Before shooting, she prefers to dissect every line of dialogue to understand the internal rhythm of the scene. In 2025, she began developing her own series for HBO, where she serves as writer, lead actress and executive producer.
The contract includes an exclusivity clause covering the development of new original ideas over a three-year period.
