Before stepping onto a television set, Ragnheiður Ragnarsdóttir spent years counting tiles underwater. An Olympic swimmer's discipline is a mechanical, solitary process that has little in common with the chaos of a film shoot. At the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympics, she was Iceland's fastest woman over the sprint distances.
Chlorine has an expiration date.
In 2012, she decided her time in the pool was over. She wasn't looking for a gentle transition but a complete break from her past life. She moved to Los Angeles to study at the New York Film Academy, and there she realized that her imposing physique was a first-class storytelling tool.
The role that redefined her career came in 2018 with the series Vikings. She played Gunnhild during the final seasons of the History Channel production. Her height of nearly six feet three inches and her background as an athlete allowed her to film action scenes without stunt doubles in the fight sequences.
But her character's strength didn't lie in the sword alone. The writers used her icy gaze to build a queen who broke away from the stereotypes of the era. As a result, audiences forgot her Icelandic accent and saw in her a believable military leader.
Shooting in Ireland under constant rain tested her patience.
Because her work on Vikings was about more than acting. The actress had to sit through four-hour makeup sessions to cover her skin in mud and fake blood. That experience opened the doors of the major talent agencies in Europe and the United States.
In 2023, she joined the cast of The Wheel of Time to bring to life Bain, a warrior from the Aiel culture. This Amazon Prime Video project confirmed that her profile fit high-budget epic fantasy productions. The series demanded physical training that she already brought from her years in elite competition.
And she didn't stop at live-action. Her deep voice led her to work in the video game industry, voicing characters in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla during 2020. The voice-over industry discovered in her a low register that worked very well in digital environments.
At the end of 2024, she joined the shoot of a drama series filmed entirely in Reykjavik. The production had a technical budget of six million euros per episode.
