Peter Franzén was born in Keminmaa in 1971 under a sky that would shape his cinematic vision. He is not an actor who chases easy applause or red carpet smiles. His training at the Helsinki Theatre Academy was the first step away from a complex family environment that he would later channel into his own literature.
In 1998, he won his first Jussi Award for his role in Kuningasjätkä. That was the moment when the Finnish film industry realized it had a stage animal capable of carrying an entire movie with barely any dialogue. But Franzén didn't want to limit himself to the northern forests.
Finnish cinema soon felt too small for him.
His ability to shift between drama and pure action has allowed him to take on all kinds of projects across Scandinavia. In 2004, he took part in Honey Baby and began testing the waters beyond his usual borders. He wasn't chasing quick fame in Hollywood, because he preferred roles with real psychological depth.
In 2015, he shot The Gunman alongside Sean Penn and Javier Bardem. That project was a real test of his fit in large international action productions. But his name truly exploded worldwide a year later.
In 2016, he joined the cast of Vikings to play King Harald Finehair. For five seasons he was one of the show's pillars and made an ambitious, cruel character feel human to viewers. Filming in Ireland demanded extreme physical preparation and a commitment of nearly six years of continuous work.
That was a public catharsis.
Franzén doesn't just bring his physique to the role of Harald; he also draws on his stage experience to give the character the nuances of classical tragedy. So when the series ended in 2020, his standing in the industry was already that of a character actor capable of leading any European or American production.
In 2013, he directed his first feature film, Tumman veden päällä. The screenplay was based on his own autobiographical novel and dealt with heavy themes such as abuse and alcoholism at home. It was a way of healing old wounds through art and showed that he has a special sensitivity behind the camera.
In 2021, he joined the cast of The Wheel of Time for Amazon Prime Video. In this production he plays Stepin and once again proves that his screen presence is enough to give weight to supporting characters. He hasn't abandoned his country's cinema, though, and regularly continues to work with Finnish directors.
In 2022, he starred in the series Helsinki Syndrome, playing a man who takes hostages to expose banking corruption. It's a role that demands total restraint and departs from the spectacle of his work in the fantasy genre. The series was sold to multiple international territories thanks to his performance.
In 2024, he joined the shoot of the movie Old Boys, which was filmed mainly on location in Estonia.
