From Iowa Stables to Billboards

Riley Smith never planned to become an actor while mucking out stables in his hometown of Cedar Rapids. His reality was quarter horses and high-level equestrian competitions in the Midwest. Then a talent scout spotted him at a shopping mall, and within a few months he was posing for Tommy Hilfiger in New York.

It was an abrupt life change.

In 2000, he appeared in Bring It On, and shortly after he starred in Motocrossed for Disney Channel in 2001. These were handsome, square-jawed boy roles that worked well on the cable television of the time. And although film came calling for mid-budget projects such as Eight Legged Freaks in 2002, Smith preferred to seek refuge in long-form storytelling.

The Actor Who Learned to Say No

His stint in the third season of 24 in 2003 marked a technical turning point. He played Kyle Singer under constant narrative pressure, and that is when he understood that dramatic intensity paid better than a catalog smile. Acting in a live-action action series demanded a physical control that modeling had never taught him.

He appeared in Joan of Arcadia and the return of 90210, maintaining a steady work rhythm. But the industry typecast him as a teen heartthrob, and that began to wear on him. So he decided to channel his energy into country music and alternative rock with his band The Life of Riley.

Music was always his true escape.

In 2013, he joined the cast of Nashville to play Luke Wheeler. It was a smart move because it combined his two natural strengths without forcing the machine. But his real acting maturity came with darker characters in productions such as True Blood in 2014, where he definitively moved away from his Disney image.

Maturing on the film set

In 2016, he starred in the TV version of Frequency for The CW. The series did not make it past its first season due to insufficient ratings in the late-night slot. Despite the setback, Smith kept landing contracts and signed on for Nancy Drew in 2019.

He played Ryan Hudson for four full seasons, until the show ended in 2023. The character allowed him to explore the redemption of an absent father within a supernatural mystery setting. It is in these supporting roles with emotional weight that he has found his most comfortable place away from the spotlight of Hollywood blockbusters.

In 2023, he appeared in an episode of the anthology series Accused under the direction of Michael Chiklis. Filming took place in Toronto on a production budget set per episode.
