The presence that won over Villeneuve

Krista Kosonen needed only a few minutes on screen for Denis Villeneuve to pick her for Blade Runner 2049. She appeared in that futuristic marketplace alongside Mackenzie Davis, and her physical, almost architectural presence caught the attention of the global industry in 2017. But even before crossing the pond, she was already the undisputed box office queen in Finland.

And it wasn't luck.

Trained at the Helsinki Theatre Academy, her academic background shows in every gesture. In 2011 she starred in Syvälle salattu, a thriller that forced local critics to look beyond her photogenic appeal. Kosonen has that quality Nordic actors have of saying a lot while barely tightening their jaw.

Mud and Nordic recognition

In 2015, the film Kätilö marked a radical change of pace. She had to shave her head and shoot in brutal weather conditions to play a midwife who falls in love with an SS officer. She won the Jussi Award for Best Actress and confirmed that her physical commitment to the role is flawless.

In 2017 she repeated the award with Miami. Here she played a nightclub dancer caught up in a plot of debts and escapes. The film took in record-breaking numbers in the Baltic countries and put her directly on the radar of HBO casting directors.

The leap to streaming changed the rules of the game.

In 2019, Beforeigners arrived. Playing Alfhildr Enginnsdottir (a Viking warrior who travels to the present day) required learning Old Norse and training in axe combat. The series performed well on the platform, and Kosonen carried the weight of the plot across two full seasons.

Science fiction and European budgets

Her technical ambition led her to regularly shoot in English. In 2023 she took part in the European superproduction The Swarm, based on the novel by Frank Schätzing. She played Tina Lund in a shoot that used the largest water tanks in Europe at the studios in Rome.

Her career doesn't stop at auteur dramas. In 2024 she joined the cast of the new adaptation of Ronja Rövardotter. The Netflix series revives Astrid Lindgren's classic, and Kosonen plays Lovis, a role that demands a mix of toughness and primal motherhood.

Her bet on the international market is total.

The contract for the series' second season was signed under strict confidentiality clauses in Stockholm. The production had a budget of €10 million per episode.
