Ranjan Raj dropped out of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay during his second year of metallurgical engineering. It wasn't an impulsive decision. He simply realized his place was on stage and not in the calculus classrooms.
And the gamble paid off.
His entry into the industry had no backing from any film dynasty. In 2014, he began working on small projects for the TVF production company, and little by little his face became familiar to the young audience who consumed digital content on YouTube.
In 2019 he played Balmukund Meena in the series Kota Factory. The character was a small-town student trying to survive the academic pressure of a city devoted entirely to college entrance exams. Raj brought a physical fragility to the role that connected with millions of viewers around the world.
The series was shot in black and white, an aesthetic choice meant to convey the monotony of student life. However, its success on streaming did not guarantee him immediate leading roles in Mumbai's mainstream cinema.
Their presence is a guarantee of realism.
That same 2019, he took part in Chhichhore alongside Sushant Singh Rajput and in the comedy Bala. These big-budget productions required Raj to learn how to stand out with only a few minutes on screen. In Bollywood, supporting actors often get overshadowed by the main stars if they don't have a strong presence.
In 2023 he joined the cast of The Vaccine War directed by Vivek Agnihotri. The film focuses on the Indian scientists who developed the COVID-19 vaccine, and Raj plays an essential worker in a high-pressure dramatic setting.
He isn't interested in traditional leading-man roles.
During 2024, his appearance in the third season of Kota Factory confirmed that his character remains the moral anchor of the story. Contracts for this kind of streaming production often include temporary exclusivity clauses that limit his appearances in other media while the series is being promoted.
The industry tends to typecast actors from Bihar in comic or rural villain roles. Raj broke that pattern by playing intellectuals and technicians with a naturalness rarely seen on the big screen. As a result, his schedule has filled with projects that steer clear of regional stereotypes.
The actor completed his final voice-over sessions for the series Campus Beats at the end of 2023 at a studio in the Mumbai suburbs.
