Renate Reinsve was determined to become a carpenter in 2020. She had spent a decade landing supporting roles in Norwegian film and working steadily in theater, but felt her career was never really taking off. So she decided to buy the tools she needed to change careers and leave auditions behind.
But one day before starting her technical training, she received a call from director Joachim Trier. He had written a script specifically with her in mind after seeing her briefly in Oslo, August 31 back in 2011. That role was Julie in The Worst Person in the World.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2021, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and Reinsve's life took a major administrative and professional turn. She won the Best Actress award at the French festival and landed on the radar of every casting director in Los Angeles. Her performance wasn't built on big theatrics but on a naturalness that was almost uncomfortable for the viewer.
The shoot of that film was carried out under strict health safety protocols, which forced the crew to live in much closer quarters. Reinsve used that bubble to build a character who navigated between chronic indecision and a longing for freedom.
Her training at the Trøndelag Teater in Trondheim gave her a technical discipline that is often missing in actors who only step onto sets. During her training years she played classical characters, and that allowed her to understand control of the body as a fundamental narrative tool.
On screen, it's clear she isn't afraid of silence. She would rather let the camera capture her thought processes than deliver a worn-out line of dialogue. This ability to hold a shot without speaking is what convinced international producers that she could lead projects outside Scandinavia.
Nobody expected that eruption on the Côte d'Azur.
Despite the media buzz, she kept her residence in Oslo in the following years. But she began traveling often to shoot English-language projects that sought the mix of vulnerability and toughness she projects on screen. In 2024, she starred in A Different Man under the A24 production banner and shared the cast with Sebastian Stan in a story about identity and physical perception.
Her move into the American market was not a full process of assimilation. She has selected her projects with an unusual calm for someone who has just discovered global success. In 2024, she also took part in the series Presumed Innocent for Apple TV+, playing Carolyn Polhemus.
That same year, she returned to genre films with Handling the Undead. In this movie, she reunited with Anders Danielsen Lie and explored the grief drama through a fantasy horror premise. The film was shot on location in Norway and kept a gloomy tone that was completely different from the brightness of her earlier work.
Theater remained her safe haven.
In May 2024, she premiered Armand at the Cannes Film Festival. Directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the film sees her play a mother caught up in a school conflict that escalates to extreme psychological limits. Filming was completed in 32 days, and most of the scenes were shot in a single empty school building during the summer break.
The production of Armand had a budget of approximately 2.5 million euros.
