Riko Fukumoto won the Toho Cinderella pageant in 2016 without ever having set foot on a film set. That contest is an institution in Japan, and winning the Grand Prize comes with a weight that often crushes teenagers. But she chose to finish her studies while taking supporting roles in TV series and small theater productions.
In 2018, she starred in the musical Majo no Takkyubin, and that's where she understood her voice was a working tool. It wasn't just about looking pretty on camera. She learned this by performing show after show on Tokyo stages.
The Japanese industry is merciless when it comes to timing.
Fukumoto avoided big action blockbusters to focus on dramas where silence matters more than dialogue. In 2020, she starred in Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare, and audiences began to see her as more than a fashion catalog face. She made her performance feel anything but manufactured in an industry that often demands absolute uniformity from its young actresses.
The turning point came in 2022 with the release of Konya, Sekai kara kono Koi ga Kietemo. The film follows a girl who loses her memory every day when she wakes up. It was a massive hit in Japan, but the surprising result came in South Korea. There, the film earned more than ten million dollars, an unprecedented figure for a Japanese romantic drama in Korean territory.
But success didn't go to her head.
She kept choosing projects with an almost surgical logic. In 2023, she took part in the adaptation of Trillion Game and proved she could handle the pace of a business comedy without losing her naturalness. That's because Fukumoto understands that digital audiences have little patience for overdone performances and prefer restraint.
So her strategy was to hold back.
For the 2024 production All About My Wife, she worked under a direction that called for long takes and minimal editing. In 2025, the movie version of Trillion Game is scheduled for release, in which she reprises her role as Rinrin Takahashi. Filming of her main scenes was completed in less than three weeks due to the studio's strict budget constraints.
