Robert Prosky didn't step onto a major film set until he reached the halfway point of his fifth decade of life. Michael Mann called him to play Leo in Thief in 1981, and the actor simply carried his stage authority onto the screen. That icy gaze and baritone voice needed no prior rehearsal.
Before moving into film, he spent more than two decades at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. There he played hundreds of roles and honed his ability to seem like the wisest or most dangerous man in the room. He didn't pursue fame in California because the stage gave him everything he needed.
Then the call from Hollywood came.
His move to screen was no accident. Casting directors were looking for faces with real weight, and Prosky brought a lifetime of experience reciting Chekhov and Shakespeare. In 1983, he appeared in Christine under the direction of John Carpenter.
During 1984, he worked alongside Robert Redford in The Natural. His role as the baseball team owner showed the mix of cynicism and elegance that became his trademark. He didn't steal scenes out of ego. He did it through sheer physical presence.
The industry kept hiring him nonstop.
In Broadcast News, released in 1987, he gave a lesson in natural acting. But it was his role in the series Hill Street Blues that made him a recognizable face to the general public between 1984 and 1987. He played Sergeant Stan Jablonski with a humanity that contrasted with the harshness of the police setting.
Many viewers remember him as the television boss in Mrs. Doubtfire during 1993. He worked with Robin Williams and brought the calm needed to a frantic comedy. But his work in Dead Man Walking in 1995 showed his more sober, restrained side.
He never stopped working.
Because he saw the craft as a test of technical endurance rather than a pursuit of applause. In 2002, he returned to the stage to play a lawyer in Democracy and proved his memory was still sharp. His children also went into acting, so the family name has remained tied to the stage.
In 2008, he appeared in his final film, The Red Canvas. Robert Prosky died on December 8 of that same year from complications after heart surgery at a hospital in Washington. His final filmography includes more than 40 feature films and hundreds of hours of accumulated television work.
