Before becoming Taiwan's most sought-after face, he was a setter on the national volleyball team. Roy Chiu entered show business almost by accident when a talent scout spotted him working at a gym. In 2002 he made his debut in the series Starry Starry Night, and his looks immediately typecast him in youthful leading-man roles with little depth.
Roy Chiu was never just a pretty face.
But media pressure and a lack of control over his career pushed him to step away temporarily. In 2006 he left the cameras to fulfill his military service and find an identity of his own beyond advertising billboards. It was a necessary period of silence to understand that acting required more than posing in front of a 35-millimeter lens.
He returned in 2008 with a different mindset. He no longer accepted just any project put in front of him. In 2011, he starred in Office Girls and got audiences to connect with his character in a way they never had before. The series reached very high ratings in Taiwan and brought him back to the top, this time with the respect of producers.
His real break from his past came in 2018. Chiu accepted the role of Jay in the film Dear Ex, playing a man caught in a love triangle after his lover's death. It was a risky bet, because it broke with the image of a heterosexual idol that his fans had followed for more than a decade.
The critics had to fall silent.
He won Best Actor at the Taipei Film Festival for that role. In Dear Ex, he used erratic body language and a resentful stare that erased any trace of his earlier romantic comedy roles. His name began to turn up at international festivals, and the Chinese film industry set its sights on him for good.
In 2020 he took part in the television adaptation of Detective Chinatown. His performance as Lin Mo brought a technical restraint that contrasted with the over-the-top tone of the film franchise. But the big commercial breakthrough was still to come in his home market.
In 2021, he starred in Man in Love, and the film grossed more than 14 million dollars in Taiwan alone. Playing a debt collector with a soft heart let him explore the grittier realism of Taipei's streets. The production was based on a Korean hit, but Chiu gave it a very specific local identity through the use of Taiwanese dialect in the dialogue.
And the gamble paid off.
During the filming of that movie, he met actress Tiffany Hsu. In December 2021, they announced their marriage in a low-key social media post that avoided any media spectacle. The union brought together two of the most powerful figures in the island's film industry at a moment of full professional maturity for both.
Unlike many actors of his generation, he has not chased quick fame in empty big-budget productions. He prefers to work with directors who care about staging and the pacing of the script. In 2024, he took part in the second season of Detective Chinatown under director Sam Quah, with a production budget that exceeded the usual standards of Asian television.
