Sammi Davis arrived in the London of the eighties with a gaze that made the camera uneasy. She had no interest in being the friendly face of British cinema. That girl from Kidderminster had something raw and real that Neil Jordan immediately recognized.
In 1986, she played May in Mona Lisa. She worked alongside Bob Hoskins in an underworld story where her presence was not decoration but the engine of the conflict. That role pulled her out of obscurity from the acting schools of Birmingham.
Then John Boorman came along.
The director cast her in Hope and Glory in 1987. The film recreated the London Blitz through the eyes of a child, but Davis brought the teenage energy needed to keep the plot from being mere nostalgia. Yet her ambition went beyond conventional period dramas.
Ken Russell saw in her the perfect mix of innocence and perversity. In 1988, they filmed The Lair of the White Worm. It was a psychedelic production loosely based on Bram Stoker, in which Davis had to contend with giant snakes and pagan rituals under the direction of an unrestrained visionary.
They reunited in 1989 for The Rainbow. Playing Ursula Brangwen was a physical challenge because of the erotic and emotional weight of D.H. Lawrence's text. Davis was paid 150,000 dollars for that job, which put her on the radar of major American productions.
Not everything was easy in Hollywood.
In the early nineties, she moved to the United States to star in the series Homefront. Over 42 episodes, she played Caroline Hailey in a drama about soldiers returning home after World War II. The series won two technical Emmy Awards but was canceled in 1993 due to low mass audience ratings.
And the bet only paid off partially.
She chose to step away from the spotlight for a long time. She married director Kurt Voss and put her personal life first in Los Angeles before returning to England. The studio system never quite fit her way of understanding the craft.
In 2014, she returned to professional work with the series The Village. She was no longer the rebellious young woman of the eighties but a woman capable of carrying the weight of a rural community in the middle of change. Filming lasted six months on location in Derbyshire in fairly harsh weather conditions.
Her role in The Last Kingdom in 2017 confirmed that her range was still intact. She played Eadgifu in a world of swords and mud that was far removed from the clean sets of California. She then kept in intermittent but steady contact with British television.
In 2022, she appeared in the series The Teacher for Channel 5. She played the protagonist's mother in four episodes shot entirely in Budapest to save money. The show's broadcast run ended with an average of four million viewers per episode.
