The Swedish stage's hidden refuge

Sanna Sundqvist didn't need fancy tricks to get into Stockholm's Dramaten. She trained at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, where she realized the Swedish National Theatre would be her home base for more than a decade.

On stage, she performed works by Chekhov and Strindberg with a dry precision that left no trace of melodrama. The discipline of the stage was her real survival school.

That restraint allowed her to move into television without losing credibility. In Sweden, prestige is built on the stage before it is built on screen.

She is a quietly intense method actress.

The Rise of Bittersweet Comedy

In 2019, she starred in Ring mamma! under the direction of Lisa Aschan. Her performance as Niki earned her a nomination for the Guldbagge Award for Best Actress.

Recognition, however, didn't change the way she chooses her scripts. Sundqvist prefers characters who are on the verge of breaking down or who make the average viewer uncomfortable.

Her ability to move between pathos and tenderness became evident in the series Bonusfamiljen. There, she proved she could carry secondary storylines with the same strength as a lead role.

The laughter in her films always carries a trace of sadness.

In 2022, she took on the role of Kim in Vuxna människor and explored the crisis of the thirties from a raw angle. The production avoided the usual filters of romantic comedy to focus on the urban anxiety of Stockholm.

The leap to the global catalog

The release of Tack och förlåt on 2023 put her on TVs around the world through a streaming platform. In this movie, she plays Sara, a woman who must manage an advanced pregnancy after her partner's sudden death.

She captured the chaos of late-life maturity without resorting to screaming or physical overacting. The shoot took place on real locations across Sweden to maintain a naturalistic tone.

And the gamble paid off.

Sundqvist keeps her residence in Stockholm and remains tied to projects that prioritize the script over the budget. In 2024 she took part in the production of Ett ärligt liv, directed by Mikael Marcimain. The shooting contract included strict clauses on the use of natural light in interior scenes.
