Sean Lennon was born on October 9, 1975 in New York, under a spotlight that never fully switched off. His childhood unfolded between the walls of the Dakota building and the recording studios where his parents experimented with avant-garde sound.
But the family name doesn't write songs.
In 1998 he released his debut studio album, Into the Sun, on Grand Royal. The record avoided conventional pop, embracing a blend of bossa nova and alternative rock that puzzled the press of the time, since no one expected such technical maturity from a debut artist.
His connection to film grew naturally through scoring soundtracks and working on artistic direction. In 2006 he released Friendly Fire, a conceptual project that included a music film to accompany each track on the album, featuring close friends from the New York independent scene.
The industry expected a copy and got an experiment.
In the following years, he stepped away from the spotlight to found his own record label, Chimera Music. From that platform he championed daring projects and collaborations with artists seeking total creative freedom outside the commercial circuit of the major multinationals.
In 2012, he composed the music for the film Alter Egos, where he also played a supporting role. His approach to film scoring moves away from classical structures, favoring analog synthesizers and ambient textures that create a very specific narrative tension.
Three years later, in 2015, he took charge of the score for Ava's Possessions. On this project he explored a dark atmosphere that showed his ability to understand visual language from the mixing desk without relying on large orchestrations.
And the gamble paid off.
Forming the band The Claypool Lennon Delirium with Les Claypool marked a break from his more melodic past. In 2016 they released The Monolith of Phobos and toured, selling out shows at cult venues across the United States and Europe.
In 2024, his work as producer and screenwriter reached a turning point in the film industry. He won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for his work on War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko.
The short film had a production budget that required collaboration with technical teams in three different countries, and the final sound mix was done to the Dolby Atmos standard.
