Michael Jackson had no childhood because his father decided Gary was too small a place for ten children. By 1964, the family group was already operating under a discipline that bordered on physical abuse. Joseph Jackson watched rehearsals with a belt and punished every off-key note or badly executed dance step.
That pressure forged a performer who, by age eleven, already owned the stage at the Apollo in New York. Berry Gordy saw the potential and took them to Motown to churn out hit after hit. But little Michael wanted to be more than just his brothers' lead singer.
It was a family business with no room for error.
In 1979, he recorded Off the Wall, and his partnership with producer Quincy Jones changed the rules of the game in the studio. They introduced sounds that pop didn't dare touch and landed four singles in the US top 10. It sold 20 million copies without relying on the nostalgia of the family group.
In 1982, he released Thriller, and the music market buckled under its weight. Jackson understood before anyone else that television was the new stage, and he hired John Landis to shoot a 14-minute short film. He spent 900,000 dollars of that era's money on a music video when the average didn't reach 50,000.
It was an all-or-nothing gamble.
The results were brutal. The album stayed at number one for 37 weeks and forced MTV to break its policy of not airing Black artists. But his visual ambition didn't stop there. In 1987, he called on Martin Scorsese to direct the video for Bad and turned a subway station into a high-end film set.
Jackson didn't just want to sing. He wanted every song to have a cinematic narrative that justified seven-figure budgets. In 1991, he signed a 65 million dollar contract with Sony that tied him to the company for life.
The 1990s brought the first serious accusations and child abuse trials. In 1993, he had to cancel his world tour, and his public image began to deteriorate irreversibly. Neverland Ranch became a gilded cage that cost him millions of dollars to maintain every month.
In 2001, he released Invincible, and the production cost 30 million dollars. It was the most expensive album in history up to that point, but sales didn't meet the record label's expectations. His relationship with Sony broke down, and Jackson began selling parts of his music catalog to pay off accumulated debts.
Silence became expensive.
After the 2005 trial, he moved to Bahrain and disappeared from the public eye for a long stretch. His finances were in ruins, and his health depended on a cocktail of medications administered by private doctors. In 2009, he announced a series of fifty concerts in London in an attempt to save his fortune.
Jackson died on June 25, 2009, in his bed in Los Angeles from an acute overdose of propofol and benzodiazepines. At the time, his personal debt had reached 500 million dollars while he was rehearsing for a tour that never got to open.
