Seth Meyers isn't the funniest guy in the room, and he knows it. That's his competitive edge. While other comics go for physical laughs or the perfect impression, he prefers to dissect reality with the precision of a surgeon who's had three extra coffees.
Before making it to television, he spent years in basement clubs in Chicago practicing improv. In 1996 he decided to cross the pond to Amsterdam to join Boom Chicago. There he learned that political humor travels across borders as long as the writing is sharp enough.
In 2001 he joined the writing staff of Saturday Night Live. It wasn't love at first sight with audiences, since his profile was more behind-the-scenes than on stage. But in 2006 his luck changed when he was named head writer of the most influential program on American television.
And the gamble paid off.
The chair for the Weekend Update segment gave him full control over the show's pace. At first he shared the spotlight with Amy Poehler, and together they refined a style of satire that avoided the easy joke. In 2008 he coordinated the scripts for the election parodies that sent NBC's ratings soaring.
In 2014 he took over Jimmy Fallon's set to host Late Night with Seth Meyers. The change wasn't just a name swap. Meyers eliminated the standing monologue and sat behind the desk from the very first minute. It was a risky move meant to set him apart from the other late-night shows in New York.
Because humor isn't just inspiration. It's a rigid structure that demands daily discipline. The segment A Closer Look was born in 2015 as a way to explain politics without filters. Meyers relies on a research team that crunches raw data while he adds the irony needed to keep viewers from switching off the TV.
And then industry recognition arrived.
Off the set, on 49 he produced the series Documentary Now! in 2015. It's a parody of classic documentaries that only someone with an encyclopedic knowledge of film could have pulled off. In 2019 he premiered his comedy special Lobby Baby on Netflix, where he explored his most personal side.
But his real strength lies in endurance. During the 2023 writers' strike, he joined his colleagues on the picket lines to defend the guild's pay rights. So his image as a suited intellectual actually hides a worker who understands the industry's gears from the ground up.
The contract rules over talent.
In 2021 he renewed his contract with NBC to keep hosting his show through 2028. The studio where he tapes at Rockefeller Center has room for 180 people. In 2024 the company decided to do away with the live house band to cut the show's production costs.
