Shen Yue

Shen Yue never planned to be in front of the camera. In 2017, she was studying Journalism at Hunan Normal University, and her goal was to work behind the scenes in the industry. One day, a model missed a photo shoot, and she stepped in to take her place. Those photos ended up in the hands of her future agent.

And that's how it all began.

Her first major role was in A Love So Beautiful in 2017. She played Chen Xiaoxi, and audiences connected with her girl-next-door image. The series racked up billions of views on digital platforms in China and pulled her out of obscurity within a few weeks.

The Weight of a Classic

But the real pressure came with the remake of Meteor Garden in 2018. Playing Dong Shancai put her under the spotlight across Asia, since comparisons with earlier versions were inevitable. She received criticism for her height and her acting style, but the production was a massive commercial hit outside its home market.

In 2019, she worked on Another Me, a television adaptation of the film Soul Mate. It was an attempt to move away from purely youthful roles. Filming lasted 120 days and demanded a far greater dramatic range than her previous work.

In 2020, she starred in Count Your Lucky Stars opposite Jerry Yan. It was a curious move, since he had starred in the original version of Meteor Garden almost two decades earlier. The 20-year age gap between the leads sparked debate on Chinese social media.

The industry sees her as a safe bet for romance roles.

Shifting Genres and Technique

During 2021, she looked for projects with a more ensemble feel. In Be Yourself, she played a journalism student, a role that reflected her own real academic background. That same year, she also worked on Use for My Talent, an adaptation of a Korean webtoon.

Because her public image feels approachable, cosmetics brands often look to her for mass-market campaigns. In 2022, she filmed Mr. Bad, playing a writer who watches her fictional villain come to life. The series earned a 7.3 rating on Douban, a solid score for this kind of production.

Off set, she spends much of her time on analog photography. She often shares her own visual essays on social media, where she controls her own aesthetic narrative. Her Weibo account surpassed 20 million followers some time ago.

In 2024, her involvement in new urban drama projects and her appearances on acting variety shows were announced. The actress has been represented by the agency Mantra Pictures since the beginning of her career. Her contracts often include strict clauses on the length of outdoor shooting days.
